hi my beloved polo has started leaking oil from the gearbox, had a mechanic look he said it was the gasket. but i have been under today and i think it's a seal where the gear linkage goes in the box anybody know if these are easy to replace .as iam sure it's not the gasket the car is a vw polo 1.0e on a 51 plate

its common on the 6n and 6n2 which is you'r car its the seal where the linkage goes,and they are a pain in the arse to do.

it's not bad it is just a drop when i have been out driving but i hate oil leaks

Yea its the selector shaft seal... Really easy to replace!

1. Put the car in 1st gear, and mark where the linkage clamps onto the shaft.

2. Remove the Gear linkage.. usally a 10mm grub screw!

3. Remove the old shaft seal, either using a seal pick ( Or if your very careful drill a pilot hole in the seal, and screw a suitable sized screw into the seal, and pull it out! ( You will loss gearbox oil when the seal is removed)

4. Make sure the housing for the seal is clean, and using a deep socket and extension, drive the seal squarely into postition!

5. Refit all the linkage, lining up where you marked the shaft!

6.Check/ top up gearbox oil!

7. JOB DONE

thats correct but done a few myself they wer a pain in the arse.

..anyone else had a go at this themselves as, ima scared :(

I'm almost sure this is whats happeneing to me although its engine oil I'm leaking. and i thought gearbox oil was red and smelly?

I have the exact same problem with a 1.4 (60bhp) Nov/51 Polo. I've paid to have the seal replaced twice and the leak always comes back, this time after a couple of months. I get a lot more than a drop too, I get a small pool after a few days!

how much did they charge you by the way

its a 5 minute job to change and the seal costs pennies.

As has already been said.

But i reckon a garage would charge about 40-60 quid.

They charged me around £50 for the job both times. I wonder if the VW dealership will give me a 12 month warranty on the work, it may cost me £85 to get it done but I'll keep taking it back to be replaced over and over again!

Mines going into the garage next week for the seal to get replaced, better £60 than a fooked gear box!
