Evening fellow Polo's. I have a quick question to ask and will be very grateful for replys. :-D

Me and the Misses have a lovely little 1.4 CL Automatic polo on V plate 1999 (Not my choice I prefer Manuals )

This is probably the best car in 5 years that has treated me well and in return I have treated it with tender care.

It comes with Annoying Common Faults such as Drivers window not working (Not nice since summer time here) and the Central

Locking not working i can hear the motor in back working when opened from the drivers door but other 3 doors don't Unlock

Sometimes they open depends if the cars in a happy mood :lol:

They are Faults I can live with. My main concern is when the car is changing in to 2nd gear. Sometimes when the car cold or warm it will BANG into 2nd gear (I end up saying ouch for the car its not nice) Its fine changing into to 3rd, 4th and 5th its just 1st too 2nd. Then other days it wont do it and change through the gears fine . Its been doing this in the last 4-5 months i wanna know if anything needs to be done. I want to catch the problem before it gets any worse. The car is at 72k and had its MOT in Demember with no faults what so ever. In January I got New spark plugs, New Shoes, New Air and oil filter changed as well as the throttle body cleaned out . This gave it a new leese of life :) If anybody got any ideas off the top of there heads be very grateful. Thanks

Hehe - sorry you've had a wait for an answer, there's not many autos on here.

Does it seem to sit too long in 2nd, or change in the normal place but just make a bang as it does it?

I'm afraid there's not a lot user-servicable about an automatic gearbox, but it's worth checking the fluid level and topping up/changing if needed, other than that, it's looking like a new box or a refurb. Generally speaking, it's about £500 to get most autoboxs refurbed.

No its fine in second Gear. Just the change from first to second. when the cars cold will bang it self into second gear from first.

When the cars all warmed up then it will change fine from first to second with no bangs

I've been looking around on other sites and come across something. A N-reg Polo 1.6 Auto.

had the same problem as mine. someone suggested getting the seals replaced in the gaerbox

since they become hard when the car is cold and dont do there job right untill they become warm. mabey replacing the old seals might do the trick... :-)

I have 1996 VW polo 1.6 with automatic transmission. The car has 62,000 miles. When the first starting out the transmission does not want to shift out of 1st gear, and revs much higher than normally. When it does shift, it’s with a “bang”. If you ease off the accelerator a little, sometimes it will shift into 2nd with less of a hard transition. After a few miles when it warms up it doesn’t do this and then shifts ok. I added a can of Wynn’s transmission treatment, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. Any suggestions to prevent that hard shift?

Anwser hi you need the seals replacing in the box when they are cold the become hard as they warm up they start to do what there are suppose to yates210456

Sorry, meant does it sit too long in 1st before going into 2nd? Just my fingers didn't do what my brain told them.

If it's normal except that, and the fluids at the correct level, I'd give it a fluid change, and see what happens.

yes if you give a lot of acceleration when first started from cold. can go up to 4-5rpm before it changes in to second gear.

I tend to pull away slowly and get a gear change around 2-3rpm. i dont want to thrash first gear only goes up to 6rpm

4-5 rpm in first is way to high to be changing gears

try changing the gearbox oil and filter (if fitted). First see what colour the oil is, if its got an oil dip-stick fitted, pull it out and see what colour the oild is, on autos, the oil should be a rich red colour. If its brown or black (dark colours basicly) it needs changing.

Also you could be right with what you've found about changing the seals, i belive the auots reply on a pressure with in the box to aid in the workings of the box. My dads old volvo, years ago, had this problem took ages to change into second when cold but also banged when it did change eventually. That was down to it losing pressure.

but first like i said check the oil colour in the box and report back on here with the results!!!
