Was talking about getting a cheap mk2 Jetta or golf before and I've just picked up a white mk2 8v H plate big bumper golf for £50 :-) The owner was more into someone giving it some love than making money.

It's something like 220k (since posting it's actually just gone 200k) in mileage but the good thing is it's got loads of service history, like seriously shit loads of receipts. It's only had 4 owners two of which were brothers who have left it standard.

It needs a door welded or replaced along with some welding around the petrol flap (not a problem for me).

I've not got underneath it yet but providing it is solid I might well make it a totally standard daily.

It's been sat for two years but more recently someones fitted a new rad and the oil looks really fresh. Also got a brand new halfords battery. The interior should clean up mint too.

So either way total bargain but will mileage like this be a factor? I don't think it's a problem considering there's cars in the states that have done 500K.

It's always reassuring when you go to move a sorned car and the owner hasn't left the hand brake on. Me and my mate with his T4 van got it easily hooked up and towed with a fixed steel bar. Sitting in the golf felt so comfy (if a little scary) on the journey back. Being almost 6ft tall I'm sad to say that my cramped polo days could well be numbered :(

Either way I'll be talking Golfs and no doubt Polos on here

Mk2s are great fun and built like tanks, a mate of mine ran his until about 260k? plus if it goes boom you can pick up an engine for near enough nothing :) love it lol

just my thoughts..

thing is its been through 220k miles worth of winter salt , some of the mk2s are getting very ropey now , chances are it needs welding elsewhere and alot of stuff is well worn by that milage

on the other hand if its been looked after and driven carefully it might be good for lots more...8v engines are cheap enough to replace, but bushes and bits n bobs will add up

why not look for a nice clean un rusted mk2...they're not silly money anyway

I'm hopefully going to get under it this weekend and try and figure out stuff like bushes and timing belt history....

At the end of the day, it was £50, see how it goes.

timing belt is like £5 and easy to do , dont fret about that

rot is gona be the biggest killer

parts tend to be a bit dearer than polo 2 , although theres more of em about most used parts have lots of scene tax added now

my trackcar has 230k on the clocks, goes a treat. the 1.8 8v gti engine is bullet proof. the gearboxes however are not!!

Ross (13kpologt) I have to admit I'm well lucky with this one , but I'm not so sure with my caddy and polo which although were less than £250 combined have or will need a lot of work. Rural places are great for bargains and when you get to know people from other farms and trades they remember you as "that vw nut from that farm"

Not the best pictures. It's actually just over 200k not 220. A clean up of spark plugs and it started up no probs :) On private farm track it feels responsive brakes and turns.

The gearbox feels like it needs lubrication but all gears are smooth. Need to do far more evaluation like at the front end where I think the front beam can be corroded.

There's a bit of corrosion on one side of the rear jack points along with the obvious body stuff but I'm not scared to drop the tank and weld.... white door required :-)

Hi mate, if i was you id analyze the service history to work out firstly when the cam belt was replaced as this can be the worst thing to fail/fix.

secondly the ignition system the replacement events of the alternator, battery, distributor cap, rotary arm, coil, plugs, HT leads - also check the looms are in good condition and that the ends of the looms are clean from oxidized copper. also perform a resistance check with a multimeter.

thirdly, compression test and water/oil leak check.

depending on what you discover and fix, you should be able to lower you chance of having a break down immensely.

o yeah, if you have someone with a MOT emissions test machine see whats going on with the readout.

well done for buying a bargain tho mate :)

With regards to the door, just get one from the scrap yard.

if your golf has electric windows you can transfer the motor / loom reasonably easily :)

Thanks for comments and advice, when I get some time I'll do some more thorough examinations. Good point about loom checks and if going ahead I reckon the timing belt will be changed anyway.

I'll need to sit down and work out it's servicing history and for that matter how much it will cost me to insure.

Frustrating times, I can't get near it because of Uni studies. It does look like it's going to be worth fixing up and the insurance is only a bit more than the polo (sometimes it's good to be old). Theres so much info and parts out there for these cars and in some ways they are easier to work on than Polo's.

I got a spare door which is black that hopefully I can spray plus a parcel shelf (without the speaker holes), window winding mechanisms and some smoked front and side indicators which the seller threw into the deal bringing the total spend now to £90 lol.

I'm not feeling the wheels, speedlines I believe. Might just paint them black in the short term. Would like to give myself a deadline to get it on the road but don't know whether to go for a total strip down over a year or more of a quick turn round. Suppose the target would be "Lowest price GTI project of show"
