I'm sure i'll get corrected if i'm wrong, but TBs basically allow air in, whilst the injector system deals with fuel. However, a carb does both. An ECU is required for the control of injection, but none is needed on a carb.

It all really depends on what your wanting to do. Carbs can be more fun, as tuning is done mechanically, and in a kind of trial and error way. Whilst tunining to an injector system can be as simple as changing the ECU mapping, although injector sizes etc. can be changed.

What are you aiming for? Injection usually gives better MPG, but can be expensive to modify. However, bike carbs seem to be popular for increasing power and maintaining MPG and a competent mechanic could do the majority of the work. Apparently they sound the tits too  Read the thread below 'torque with bike carbs' for more bike carb info. Webbers and del torros are also an option for carbs, but can be expensive (around 400 for a pair, whilst a bike carb set up can cost as little as 100!)

First off, decide what you want to achieve with your moification. Do you have limited funds, can you do some work yourself, do you want power increases, or better economy. Depending on your car (you say 1.3 8v, but what year/mark?) you'll have carbs (earlier, circa 1990) or injection (post 1990)

Are del torros Spanish built Webers, then ?

If you choose carbs depending on the age of the car you'll have to watch out for emissions come MOT test time and the fuel bill before then.

Old cars that originally came with a carb are allowed a generous 4.5% CO2 at idle.

You can get down to 0.018% at idle with a carb (I have the certificate) but it's much easier using ECU controlled injection with throttle bodies.

As a MegaSquirt using friend of mine is fond to remark - "You will only ever achieve a compromise - never perfection with a carburettor - but it's fun trying".

lovely set of benicio's

I'm hopfully doing the same for my squareback.....proberly going with r1 or gsxr1000 carbs 8-)

yea carbs are used on older cars before injections cars came about,

dont quote me on this but i think u have to fit throttle bodies if your car is already injection, dont think carbs fit on a injection car.

They do fit on injection cars, as I have just put cbr600 carbs on my mk4. Price wise, carbs are by far the cheaper option, my whole setup cost me roughly £200, could even have been done for less. As for throttle bodies, ECU is needed for the injection and the ignition, which means getting the system which is £££ and then rolling road session(s) to map it and set it up properly, which is more £££. The carbs can be roughly setup and used as I have done at the moment, but to get the best out of them they also need to be tuned on a rolling road.

DUB-WAY - you will need smaller carbs than those from either a 600cc or 400cc, cbr600 carbs I know have been used many times

cheers mate

my car 1.3 8v M reg mk 4

its got p&p head

gt cam

stainless 4-2-1

just wanting abit more power/acceleration

il do all the work myself (well my dad will :D)

i dont really want to spend loads but i have got money

guess it will be carbs unless there is any other info??

if i go for carbs what would i need? i.e what size carbs , manifold ect

thanks for the help

aaron

Well for much better acceleration you'll be needing more torque, but you should be able to get around 110bhp with that engine + a set of carbs.

110

carbs it is :D

as i said what will i need ??

thanks

This has been covered a lot, but have a look at the thread 'torque with bike carbs'. The collective knowledge is there. People, not myself i might say, tend to dislike repeat questions. Not too helpful for us noobs! Or try the search. I'd explain, but have not done it yet myself, but am going to.

hope thats helpful

oops, assumed it was a GT engine, and read it as a different cam. A few beers gone etc etc. Umm, search recent threads on carbs.

If you get a more aggressive camshaft and a set of carbs properly set up you could see upto 110bhp, though maybe lower compression would hamper it. Obviously providing the other things are good, engine health, the head properly ported etc.

You'd need for the carb conversion:

Electronic Ignition loom from a mk2 polo,

Carbs (either twin 40's or the right size bike carbs),

Suitable manifold,

Electric fuel pump and regulator.

Don't know how things would work come MOT time though.

what problems will i get at MOT time??

i have used the search and couldnt really find any topics helping me much

thanks for all the help

Yeah, thats the parts, but then you have to bolt them all togther! What age is your car? If its post 90 (i think, dont quote) you may have problems come MOT since your emmisions will be very high. Plus you probs cant run your catalyst cause any unburnt fuel will ruin it. Carbs seem to be a better option for older cars since emmision restrictions were a lot more relaxed.

if i get everything i need i dont think setting these up would be a problem

car is 95 mate

so il have to get a new exhaust without cat?

thanks

Straight through yeah. Though wen it does come to MOT, i'd be crossing my fingers. MikeyMK and Max_crox are the guys to speak too, but even they run theres on MKII polos, before emmisions laws were tightened. If you dont want hassle every year, it might be worth investigating the laws first, TBs may be better option for you

H&S

Emissions laws changed in 1992, i don't really see why you can just lean the carbs right up come MOT time. (?)

TB's are probably a better option for everyone, but they cost so much more, so turn out to be an option which is out of the question.

You wouldn't have to decat, but the cat may deteriorate with carbs... (?)

so if i take the cat out it will be ok?

just put it back on for MOT ??

what size carbs do i need??

thanks

Search, there is VERY recent threads that will give you pretty much all the answers.

Do you want bike carbs or twin 40s?

Running very lean can damage the engine internals. I wouldnt want to do it pesonally.

You say TBs are expensive, but couldn't you just get some fromm a larger car from a scrappy etc?

its not the throttle bodies themselves that are the expensive part, its the ECU and mapping needed to run them which is the expensive part.

carb's, if set up right should be fine for an MOT, if they aren't then they are clearly running too rich anyways

Running them lean for an MOT's emissions test sake wouldn't do irreversable damage to the engine, either.

that was usful, its always good to have someone break it down abit so its more understandable.

Sarcasm?

H&S

nope i am actually a genuine thickett :D
