I've been a member of these forums for a while, and I've read some threads here and there to get some idea, but i think it would be easier to make my own topic and get some advice personalised for me

I really don't know much about ICE, but I recently got a 1996 Polo (believe that makes it an MK3) - i don't have any documentation with me, and won't do for a while so I can't check.

I'm really into my music and thought it would be a good place to start in my car. I really don't have much of a budget, and I'm not looking for anything fancy - no subs / amps unless I really need one. Was just looking at a fairly decent head unit and some decent speakers.

I know that music sounds better if it comes from the front - so I was thinking of replacing my components on the driver and passenger doors - though if anyone has any better advice let me know!! - as well as a fairly decent head unit. But i am not sure what size speakers i would need to place the original components in the front - the car is at my dad's house which I won't be for a few weeks at the moment - so if anyone could enlighten me...?

Really my budget is only £150, maybe £200 if I save up a bit first... but that's really pushing it.

As this is my first car, I'm just looking for something to get me by for a year or 2 until I upgrade to a newer car - hopefully a newer polo (with a bigger engine!)

So to summarise:

1996 MK3 Polo

Want to get some decent speakers

And a decent head unit

Budget £150 (£200 if it's really really worth it)

And any other advice

Dash 1s are 10cm

The door speakers are 6.5"/17cm

I have the same prob iv only changed my door and dash speakers as dont have the money and yer its not bad but needs more really

Yes, the front door speakers are 6.5mm

not saying that you are wrong, actually i believe you more than anything else, but I have seen other forums and other websites refer to '96 polos as MK3's and no replies correcting them. Just want to confirm that your reply wasn't a mistype, or if there is some variable that makes it an MK3 or MK4?

sorry, i really am new to this whole car stuff. i get all my paper work next week, finally, moving house is a nightmare.

and just to let you know, i've decided to go for these speakers but haven't decided on head unit yet

^^ Its known as a Mk3f but its the same as 6n/mk4....

The majority on this forum call it a mk4/6n.

BIGGER IS BETTER!! haha! Ebay mate, thats your best bet. But you will struggle to get two sets of speakers and a head unit for £150.

If i were you, leave the front speakers (if they work that is), set of 6x9 and a four channel head unit, sony or something midle of the road like that

I'm also in the same situation where I'm looking to upgrade the standard sound system.

looking for a head unit and some component speakers.....just wanted to know if i'll need an amp to power the component speakers or i can just replace the standard speakers?

i know you need an amp for the sub but thats about all i know!

an amp will always help to improve the quality of sound when fitting aftermarket speakers

in my personal expieriance i would definately get the infinity speakers over the alpine ones, and you can pick up a blutooth sony headunit from somewhere like motorword for around the 100 mark. they are pretty good.

i refer to my polo thats the same shape as yours as a polo 6n mk4 as the mk 3 is the polo g40/gt etc shape which is much more square.

hi, a friend has just come to me and asked if i can wire some 6x9s and amp into his 6n polo, whats the best way of doing this and best way of getting power from amp in boot to the battery?

you will need to run 2 speaker cables to the back of the car these will need to be connected to the green and the green/black which are the rear left and the purple and purple/black which is the rear right both the green and the purple are the positive connections

to run a power cable there are loads of grommets below the header tank in the passenger side of the engine bay just poke your cable through on and it will come out behind the carpet in the passenger footwell

then you just need to remove the side trims running up the lenth of the car they unclip really easily

connect your earth for the amp to a seat belt bolt

for the best sound kwality i wouldnt put your speakers to a head unit,i would by a amplifier even if it a cheap one for now.

If you are buying a sub wooofer get a mono amp for that and a multi cahnnal amp for your speakers.And for size wise dnt look at the watts look at the rms value,250rms speakers would be nice

The speakers you have chosen are a good choice IMO, and something like this http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cde...kis8vutmdq05b94 would be good as a head unit.

As your on a budget I wouldn't worry about amping your speakers, and that little stup should sound good untill you want to upgrade a bit more, but then I would probably reccomend upgradin rear speakers, though don't spend to much unless you really like your friends, and the a well chosen sub should add good depth and warmth to your music, you will find you need more bass in a car than standard home setup because of the sheer nature of a noisy moving car, hence why where there are much bigger subs, but a 10 or 12inch sealed enclosure sub should sound good.

I would disagree with buying the stuff from Bass Junkies unless you want Britney Spears to sound like thunder, plus you wouldnt have anything up front which is where your sitting!

yeah bass junkies isnt the best of places,but its good if your on a budget,

car audio direct is very good place to get stuff from but it is alot more costly than bassjunkies

Although your coment about not having any power up front,you would have power up front if you amp the front speakers,thats why i said its better to get an amp for all your speakers

A wouldnt buy anything from halfords,unless you see a realy good head unit on sale,but try stay away from them.

If you amped all the speakers then the front would have more power, but if your going to leave them stock then you probably wouldnt get much improvement because stock speakers are normally crap, Personally I would spend the money on the front speakers because thats where your sitting! But thats just me! :p

yeah your right you would need to upgrade front speakers to,a dnt think your sound would be that good on a budget any way.the amount you spend usaully reflects the kwality you will have.

buying amp for speakers and instead of sub just have the six by nines and buy some front mid base door speakers.That should sound good enought if your on a budget any way
