Got to spray a headlight washer cap in the next few days and just bought a spray can from halfords, the same colour as my car (VW flash red) for £6, just rang VW for the part and he said they can supply a spray can for £9 odd. Is it worth me taking the halfords spray back and getting the VW one? Anyone used either of them and what did they think they were like?

Personally as it's only a £3 difference I would get the VW stuff if you can, halfords paint never has been the best quality and won't ever be as tough as proper VW stuff.

Halfords paint stuff is shit in terms of colour matching.

It is brilliant for spraying things like interior bits and wheels etc which don't need matching up to the bodywork but for the actual colour match paints they are shite.

My mate got the silver one for his civic, and it turned out more like gunmetal, even though it was apparently the right shade of silver.

Looks like il be taking it back if I can find the recipt then. Need it to spray a headlight washer cap.

You may not need the reciept mate because if it says Halfords on it it's obvious you got it from there.

Think you'll find though that they might just give you a credit note as opposed to a cash refund though.

i have had no problems with the halfords paint i used the stuff they mix for you

On the shelf halfords paint is shit, doesnt match up.

The stuff that gets mixed up is bang on!

They got a good match on steel blue for me!

But if I where to do it again, I'd go to VW after realising they aren't all that expensive!

I got it from VW in the end, cost £7 more but had laquer with it, and the vw one was 150ml less.

I ended up messing it up so got to buy a new part and paint now again

Not tried Halfords yet but the VW stuff was great in alpine white. It is more expensive though and it does come in a smaller can (330ml vs 150ml), so even more expensive really.

I'm going to use Halfords stuff for all layers except the top one, which hopefully if I use the VW stuff then it'll be a better match on top.

I used halfords flash red off the shelf and it is nothing like the colour!!!

Flash red from VW in a tin is the same when you use the laquer they give you. I messed the job up twice which means I got to buy new parts and a can of spray though

pretty much every paint colour has at the very least 3 differnt shades. sum new colours can have up to 5 shades.

so a off the shelf colour will be the most comon shade.

not counting age of the paint as reds fade.

as its on a black plastic part it will more than likly end up being darker un less u use a light grey primer. white would make it pink lol.

as its on a part as small as washer jets save your self 3quid and just get it done... just cos it got vw on the tin wont made it be any better lol

I've used some alpine white from halfords and tbh it is pretty much a spot on match, obv the colour of the car has slightly changed over the years, but its pretty damn close for me on my smoothed boot plynth

Reds are always a nightmare to match up cause they get effected by the sun so much.

Ok guys I'm looking for paint. I need it to be high temp engine paint bc I'm re-doing my brakesBut the color I want is kinda diffrent and i dont think they will have it. Anyone know of any places to get this

they have colour chips and can mix it into cans, better than halford

If you want to match paint you need to get a specialiast to make it for you,If you have a bran new car and get the right colour code from halfords it would probly match very well but with older cars the sun,rain wax etc will effect the shade of colour on the car.

red is the worst to match.

if you want the cash bck then take reciept if not then dont but they will not give you a credit note you will have to spend whatever it cost on summin else in store tht day

I've used the halfords flash red paint and if you give it a good shake it aint bad

I'm not a dick thanks very much, only 17 n i know the things well tbh, not all halfords staff are stupid lol

These are both acrylic (water based) paints are they not? Brought in because of European emission laws?

What confuses me is if they are acrylic then do they not need laquer to protect them?

I buy mixed paint from an Independent place and have had good matches even in red but I've never been convinced they offer good protection without laquer.

Also thing to note is what etch primer (for bare metal) and/or high build primer. I've had reaction between the two before which ruined the finish. I've also heard a someone say that that most vw's factory paint have a white primer? primer colour obviously effects match too.

I've got a black door for my mk2 golf to respray white which isn't ideal or is it not a problem?
