I have a 9n 1.2 litre engine code AWY. now i was thinking, do i need to change the timing chain at some point? I know that if it were a timing belt it has to be changed for sure. It has done around 83k km. haynes says that the "1.2 litre models have a maintenance-free timing chain". does that mean it does not need to be changed in the lifetime of the car since it is a chain and not a belt?

no but u will have to change the tentioner tho as its common for them to break and knock the timing out but it doesnt damage anything coz its a non interferance engine,it will just keep turning over and over and u dont even know that its done it

ok mate 10x a lot. At which milage do you think it would be best to change it? and do you think i should change the timing chain once I would have taken it out anyway to change the tensioner?

I know we're on about Polos here but on BMW's the timing chains dont need changing till around 300k...

thnk its bout 60 to 80k so best get it done mate and yes you would be best to just get the chain done while doin the tentioner

I had the same thoughts with my 9N. The tensioner is not meant to be replaced in similar styles to a cambelt, however a few 9N owners have had issues with these going...

Panda spoke about similar issues and there is a kit for £50 ish from VW that can be fitted as an 'uprated timing belt kit'.

no its not,but i would personally change it because i know of this common problem,wee had a few at my old work like that(vw specialist).

doesnt have a timing belt they engines have timing chains,and believe its quite expensive
