Snapped Cambelt on a Polo 6N 1.6

Featured Replies

Hi gang, does anyone have any advise on this please!..

I've got a polo 1.6 and the cambelt has snapped, it was broken when I got the car so I know nothing else that might be of use.

I wanted to know if I can get away with just replacing the belt or am I likely to have piston damage too? Has this happened to anyone and if so what damage happened?!!

There is a very high chance that there is piston damage.

Possible bent valves...at least you only have 8...

When the belt breaks is it guaranteed to cause damage to valves and or piston heads?

When I turn the camshaft only normal effort is required and the valve springs compress as normal, even though, could any valves still be bent and caught up in there guides?

Has anyone just replaced the belt after breakage without internal damage and been lucky?!!

Thanks!

take the head off and see whats damaged,if your lucky and there aint major damage your getting a fresh headgasket anyway, dont throw a new belt on until youve had the head off

Dont worry, there's very little chance of any internal damage.

This is because its a non-contact type combustion chamber design,so you can turn the engine over with the valves almost fully open and the pistons still wont hit them.

Wrap a belt on it and give it a go.

Top post mate! Just what I wanted to hear as some non-contact banter had been flying about and what you've said gives me hope! Fingers crossed!

AFH is contact,yes.

just curious, is there a list available somewhere with the engine codes and if the engine is interference type or not?

I think the 1.6 8v is the only one which isn't. The 1.4 8v may not be,too,it certainly has more clearance than the 1.05,1.3,and all 16v engines. These latter engines are all liable damage with failed cam timing.

bear in mind that there are 2 different 1.48v engines AEX which has flat top pistons and the combustion chamber in the head

mine has got the AWY 1.2 liter engine (polo 2002 9n) interference or not?
