Sills

Featured Replies

I had noticed a few rust spot on my old polo & thought I'd beter address the problem now rather than later. Anyhow the rust spots soon turned into 2 smallish hole when cleaned back with a flapper disc. Now because I am thinking of keeping the polo for a while I thought it would be better the replace the sill rather than patching it up.

So managed to get a sill from my local VW dealer. However the new sill I picked up today whilst it looks a perfect fit it as 4 "oval" holes stamped into the underside part of the sill next to the seam. What are this for? the part no. say 6n3****** it was ordered using my reg no. to id the car, but i am stuffed if I can work out what the hole are for. I thought it may be for grommets but the sill on the polo doesn't have them.

So Does anyone know what this are for??? ???

The sills are welded on aren't they? They're part of the car!

I would just have the rust repaired and the sill painted.

I had a gash in my sill repaired last year.

Yes, sill are welded on spoke to the VW dealer I bought them from & they were saying that they have been "improved " thought the years from 6n through 6n2 to 6n3 models & the ones I have are 6n3 which come with those holes they are supposed to be bungs in them.

I would have just welded the holes myself or get a trusted welder to patch them. Fitting a whole sill could be opening a can of worms with all the prep needed and all the seem sealer and painting... depends how bad and where the holes are.

The holes in the panels as you say would have gromets which are removable to inject cavity wax (rust prevention stuff like waxoil, dinotrol or Bilt Hamber). My mk2 square has two bungs/gromets per side for this also.

job done........but to be honest why didnt you go the whole hog and fit the full sill rather than just the door step part?

I could have just got the 2 bit of rust patched but I am planning on keeping the wee polo for as long as possible, so thought I'd get a better job done by replacing the sill the 2 areas that had rusted through was near the front wing at the drainage hole & at the seam of the sill to the rear quarter panel.

I was supprised there was no more rust though once I'd taken the sill off, prev experiance says that it will be worse than you think this time it was just the area at the 2 drainage holes. so with hind sight I'd have just patched it. But you live & learn.

I did not do this it was done at the college I work at the lads were using it as experiance.

It was replaced with a VW replacement sill. But from what I was told the spot welds were drilled out the sill was then seperated from the rear quarter panel& the other joints were seperated using a thin chisel the new sill was offered up & spot welded in to place.

It is still to be stone guarded & then eventually painted.

The VW sill only goes to the joint at the quarter panel were as some of the pattern sill were full length as the rust was only in the sill panel I just replaced that part. I had thought it was going to be in worse condition but it turned out to be a lot better than I'd tought.
