When looking for car insurance the comparision sites almost always ask "How many seats does the vehicle have?" now... I'm i right in thinking that technically, the car i have (3 door, 1.4 Polo L) has 3 seats, or does this question realy mean "How many passengers does the vehicle carry?"

I always get confused with this question realy, if it is the Latter, why don't they just say that??!!

How many people will it carry, or how many seatbelts are there would be better :)

Well if i look at the question for what it says... my car has 2 front seats and a long back seat... Do you class a sofa as 3?

I suppose, actually, looking at it now "how many SEATS" rather then in my head i was thinking "chairs"....

The question should realy be reworded to "how many does the vehicle seat?" rather then how it is?!!

I set the bar a few years ago at 8 in a Mk2.

Was a bready though, so some would say unfair advantage.

However,its not as simple as that..

My ex-insurers sent my certificate through with '4' in the 'seats' category. So when i called them up and asked them to send me a corrected version,they said they only insure three-point belts - not my lap-belt.

After a short but frank discussion on why VW bothered to fit the lap belt in the first place,i cancelled the policy. Hence the 'ex' part. They kinda won really,as they got about five weeks out of me - but as I'm yet to have an accident,they'd have got near three years by now.

It was pretty obvous to everyone before the thread was started what the insurance question realy ment and wasn't hard to put a spin on it to see what others think of the naff wording which was what i was more directing discussion about... As every other part of insurance is small printed down to a tee, why is something as simple as saying "how many passengers does the vehicle carry?" have to be worded in such a way?
