Getting Tracking done after lowering

Featured Replies

yo, coilovers came the other day i have fitted them(qwill get pics up once internet at home is sorted) and finnally did it, took to kwik fit, they wouldnt touch it, wouldnt go up the ramps and the callipers wouldnt go under the arch, so took it to the nezxt place where they do the old tracking way with mirrors, now i dropped it from standard height to about 3 inch off the floor surely that should alter the tracking, he just told me that it has gone a bit out and not enough to cause problems???

is that right, or was i just fucked off by him???

youl need the tracking done if you dont want to keep ruing tyres, mine was so far out once i made a pretty much new tyre go bald in 140 miles

agree with above, you want the camber and tracking done if you just lowered. expect to pay about £50 for it, bit cheaper than tyres.

can you actually change the camber on a mk4, because i dont think you can. you can wobble and maneuver the point where hub meets the coilover, but thats about it, isnt it?

i took mine to awesome gti, and they were just like " we cant do camber on this", so they just sorted the tracking, and all has been fine, tyres are holding out fine.

You can do the front camber on any car.

You need the camber and tracking doing ASAP, for the sake of your tyres and your own safety.

The front camber is set with lasers, similarly to how tracking is done.

how do you adjust the camber on a mk4 then?

hmmm, I'm gonna try someone else, for the tracking, i thought the camber couldnt be altered on mk4, i just tried to get it as straight as i could,

its adjusted on a mk4 using the two bolts at the base of the strut holding the hub on, the top hole of the two is slightly elongated to allow the hub to tilt, hense giving camber.

sounds like typical 'awesome' gti work that cant be arsed unless its a mk4 golf wanting a remap!!!

 in all fairness they did a good job, and what youv just explained is what i thought. but then again it was a woman on the phone from awesome that told me they couldnt adjust it

tbf you cant judge just coz its a woman giving the information.

it was a joke, I'm not sexist

You can if shes the person that just answers the phone and doesn't actually have a clue about what it is the garage does. I always prefer the phone to be handed over to the actual technicians and mechanics that perform the work.

how do you kno she wasnt a technician?

how do you kno she wasnt a technician?

I never said she wasn't, I said IF she is just a receptionist.

anyone know why the guy said it has hardly made a difference, i mean i have dropped it a lot, the last polo had to have it done after lowering springs on. that was bad just pulled to left all time,

this doesnt seem to pull to one side was he a shit mechanic????

What gives you that idea? No factory Polo before '94 has adjustable camber.

yeah I'd like to see you adjust camber on a mk3 polo!

on later ones there is a slight bit of adjustment by loosening the strut to hub bolts.

so...whats the deal with tracking then??? can it be lowered without doin anything or did the guy chat bollocks

when you lower a car it affects the geometry simple fact!

it might not be enough to notice or to make tyre wear instantly apparent but you do need to have your camber and toe reset every time you change the height of the car!

which is why i always chuckle when people are going up and down on their coilovers and wonder why their car handles funny or their tyres are shot! lol

yeah i know your ment to get it tracked, that what i was doin but i had to have it done old style with mirrors instead of callipers and he said it has hardly gone out, went to a few others no one could do it or check it.

what to do???

try someone like R-Tech or other car modification specialists, they may not be local but they are used to dealing with modified cars,

it is possible to fit decent equipment to low cars as i do it at work every day on porsches, bmw's, lotus's, lambo's etc.

unfortunately i dont think you would want to pay the £250 we charge for a geometry set up.

plus there is no way he checked your camber with the dunlop gauges(mirror things) as they only measure toe.

you should always get the tracking checked when you've had the suspension in bits, even if you then put the same suspension back on. They obviously just didn't want to do it, there's no way they can say if it's right or not by just looking at it.

If you lower the car,the tracking must be re-aligned because the steering arms will sit at a different degree (lowering usually makes the steering arms more horizontal, which pushes the outer end of the arm further toward the hub, making the wheels face 'toe in').

A lead weight hung on a yard of fishing wire against a tilt gauge is an accurate DIY method of measuring camber and castor (note hub must be at wheel-height for accurately measuring castor,as the wheel will be off for access).

A long length of perfectly straight tubing,a tape measure, and a wall, can usually be used to set tracking, depending on car - especially easy for those with 'poke'.
