GT cam is a good upgrade while retaining the AEE low down torque, although its not that different to the standard cam which is why I havn't got round to fitting mine.

A few have tried a 268 cam and some like it some don't, with the 268 your going to loose the low down torque and the engine doesnt really like high revs so its sort of against the grain without mods to suit like a lighter flywheel, shorter box imo

The 268 i fitted, even though i had no vernier so was out by a couple of teeth, made a difference at higher revs.

If you're AEE'ing a light car though, i suggest that you try it first... It's likely that it will have all the power you need with a set of carbs/gt injection. Though if it is for a 6n, they make a difference coupled with other mods to help it breath - mine was on twin 40's with a 4 branch etc, so not comparable to just sticking one in a standard 6n engine.

It'll be in a fairly well stripped down bready with bike carbs. So there will be plenty of torque there. So would a GT cam be good for that? Also, MikeyMK ran an aee with bike carbs and said that he had too much torque, so would GT cam be a good addition?

Probs would have a 4-2-1 exhaust too, but a standard long ratio box, i want to be able to use it on long journeys. Would there be any power advantages to the GT cam?

It probably won't reduce your torque, but will move it around. You should ideally try to get better gear ratios instead of trying to make less torque, with the long box it should be ok. As i said above, i'd run it standard with the bike carbs and 4-2-1 before upgrading again, you may find that you like it as it is. They do pull hard...

Another thing is that the standard AEE cam has high lift, whereas the GT doesn't... VW must have designed it that way for a reason, but i'm not a camshaft expert.

Ahhh, did it. In that case, if i was to upgrade, i'd be better going for a specific AEE cam. Thanks, thats the kind of answer i was after.

Do you have any idea what standard power output is of the AEE?

It will be 100bhp+ with carbs/exhuats side sorted, with more torque.

Not bad, but wouldnt mind seeing 120ish, since thats what an AFH can push out right?

120 is very achievable with the cam and headwork aswell.

120is what i will be aiming for in mine, but from reading this i have one question...what degrees is the AEE standard cam??

I'm not oging to run mine on bike carbs....well not yet..so with headwork, and exhaust work, and a 1.3 CL 5speed box, what sort of power will i be looking at? I'm not bothered about power as much as tourqe i dont want to loose much bottom end tourqe, i like being in 5th and being able to pull away from a scooby =]...this was on a 1.4 box in my ibiza...so god nos what it will be like in a polo on a 1.3!

When you say head wrok, what do you mean, P+P? And cam, which one?

I think mines just under 100bhp and I have just been out for a play now I have finished uni and I'm not lugging the eqivlent of 2 people in the boot its quite suprising. I had forgotten its quite nippy 8-)

If its in a mk3 or mk2 110bhp and whatever torque the 1.6 makes at that bhp, it should keep you happy for a while. I carn't help but think the cam in the AEE/ABU engines are pretty good anyways, the main things to sort are the massive flywheel the engine comes with! As well as getting rid of the crap injection and exhaust.

Personlly I don't think the cam is a big downfall for the 1.6's its the rest of the crap that comes with it!

Well it'll be on bike carbs, so thats the injection gone! :-o And a decent exhaust.

If not the cam, how else to get more power, small head skim?

Will this be in a mk2? I seriously think it's worth trying before spending out over £200 extra ontop for the camshaft/vernier pulley (which you will need unless the camshaft is AEE specific, most people buy 1300 ones that you can get easily) Then even more if you want head work.

Ah, the pulleys a diff are they? Does the sproket of the gt cam not fit on the aee cam? Maybe i'll just get the head work done, i have a friend who might do it cheap.

Thanks for the help

The standard pulley fits but it won't time up perfectly without a vernier pulley, so add on rolling road costs aswell

The rr was factored in already, to set up thecarbs. tbh, it seems like a lot of hassle for not much gain, i'll just have a blast with head work and exhaust

How do you rate skimming, does it add much? Forget costs for now :-D

how much is an RR session?

how much is an RR session?

I guess it depends where you go! but someone was saying its around 70 for the first hour, then 20 for every hour after.

H&S

aah right, thats not too bad, will have to check out locally lol

I personally wouldn't bother skimming the head until you take it off, but if you're getting it ported before using the engine i suppose you could.

Yeah i would be doing it whilst its all out the car. I only ask because i dont want to have to take it all out again if i decide to have work done. Hence the cam Q. Are the performance gains from a skim noticeable, or is it something to get the last few horses out?

H&S

A skim won't give any real noticable gains, it's just a worthwhile thing to do to get your HG to seal very nicely. Skimming the head however will put the cam timing out a small amount, so if you get it skimmed you may want to invest in a vernier pulley... or then maybe cam and vernier.

I'd just not skim it..

Mmm, i see. I'm thinking of full rebuild, hone and all. But then again, its prib mot worth te money for a limited-tunable engine. I'll probs leave the skim then ta for the info

what is a vernier pulley then?

H&S

A vernier pulley allows you to make small adjustments to the cam timing to optimise for your engine. By skimming the head you will reduce the distance between the camshaft/crank so it will put your cam timing out, the pulley lets you factor this back in and perfect it.

check the for sale sections, there is a couple there... you should get the idea
