I did the same thing in my golf - that exact setup but used dellortos and bought a schrick cam (268) after a while using the GT one.

It works fine yeah, no problems. Made the golf fun at slower speeds, being a 1.4 you're not going to be accelerating too hard at higher speeds but it is not bad! The double valve springs make little difference really so the 2G one will be fine. It would allow you to buy a GT one and get that ported aswell if you were going down that route, without taking the car off the road. Though I'm not sure that even all GT heads use the double valve springs.

If you want it quicker, a 1.6 AEE is the other option that will still allow you to go back to the polo. It's better to make that decision first rather than decide to go for the AEE after you have the above running, it would mean buying a difference inlet manifold again and changing the carb jetting. They can use the same exhaust manifold and the ignition side of things. Its more suited to the golf really due to the extra torque, but the ABD is still good fun.

Which ever one you choose it will be miles better than the standard 2G anyway.

Sorry if this is a daft question, but why would he have to get a different inlet manifold if he changes the bottom end to an AEE one in future?

You dont swap just the bottom end, it wouldn't work. You have to swap the whole engine, and the inlet ports/spacing on the head is different.

Everything bolts up to the AEE apart from the inlet and iirc the thermostat housing so just make sure you get that with it.

The AEE makes it a faster car for sure, but not as rev happy.

I bought my schrick cam second hand off here, G-werks will be able to supply you one though. I didn't have any headwork done, as it was an engine i had just thrown together so didn't want to spend £400 out on it when i'd probably change it again.

Mine made 95bhp without any proper tuning of the carbs, just put in close enough chokes/jets. I never had the AEE rolling roaded but going by other's they make over 100bhp easily and far more torque than the ABD, a friends made 104bhp/120ftlb with just carbs/4 branch - no uprated camshaft or headwork.
