Base? How do you mean, the magnet underneath? And style? Obviously form over function, as i cant see sound being any better. Wallys if you ask me :lol:

doesn't it also give it more of a bass tone as the whole boot becomes the enclosure and the sound resonates more on th cone side as the space is restricted or something?

Hmmmm, but all the sound is then directed into the floor, or whatever its mounted in. I can imagine it makes the whole bloody thing vibrate like f@#k though!

Anymore ideas out there?

There's no acoustic benefit, the only reason you would do it is either to show the bling (audiobahn) or so that you don't have to factor in the size of the sub for the air displacement in the box...

mounting it upside down or the normal way has absolutely no difference on the aucoustic output except to look nice if it has a nice showy basket

Depends on the basket, some have massive gaps exposing the back of the cone but others are well protected, generally, the back of the cone, with any amount of basket protection is going to be better protected than the face of it (no protection whatsoever)

Waste of space if you ask me - small box on one side of the boot (or shallow,wide one at the back of a loon) with the cone face/s pointing out (basket in box) has got to be favorite to anyone interested in practicality over presentation.

Or you could go for the 'i still live with my parents and dont need to go shopping' look.

Or just put four punchy 6x9s in the shelf.

When you mount it upside down, it does offer the entire boot space for "resonance" as implied by pepe.

To get the best sound you want to make the waves reflect at their natural frequency, which is the entire idea of a sub box. By having the box at just the right volume, the sub drives the air at its natural frequency...and BOOM you get some killer bass!

It may be possible, that by some fluke, or by some fairly simple calculations, to make the volume of your boot a multiple of the resonant volume! therefore causing a similar effect to to mounting it in an enclosure!

What i am saying is the enclosure is designed for a reason, so just the right amount of air is moved, when you flip it, you loose this accuracy, you may get lucky and retain the sound, but its very unlikely!

So what would you suggest, just using a box? I want to mount it in the wheel well either way, so can your physics decide for me whether it should be normal, or upside down :?

How do you work out the best volume of the box? Do you have the formula? I'm familiar with physics etc. so they shouldnt scare me! Failing that, any helpful web sites? I want punchy bass idealy as i'm more of a rocker, than a trance-wobble head! haha!

It won't make a difference. Just mount it in the usual basket-in-box.

Make a fiberglass box, have a look in the MK4 gallery as some dude has made one in the wheel well and it looks good

But its going in the wheel well as i want a flattish boot as the rear seats are getting removed. Just wondering.

The are a plethera of useful websites....smack it into google....

it totally depends on you sub, usually the manufacturer will recommend a volume for ported etc...i have sold many subs and the boxes usually say!!

to work out the volume of your spare wheel bay use this: pi r^2 h (where r is the radius (not diameter), and h is the height)

make sure you use the right units, depending on what the manufacturer quotes, and personally i would subtract the mounting volume of the sub, you need to imagine it is two cones one inside the other, then minus the two volumes, i can explain it or you can just bung me the dimensions lol, i don't doubt you could do it, but its hard without having all the correct characters and not being able to draw a picture!

oh and yeh just mount it the normal way, could swap it to test but should sound better normal way up!

No, i see what you mean, good attempt with the charachters! Be a good use of my gcse maths, from a decade ago! I may struggle with the sub volume. Though the manufacturer should specify its displacament shouldnt it? I dont have the sub atm. I take it the same goes for 6x9 enclosure too?

just spend ages trying to find a video deomonstarting how the voume would effect the sound, best i could find was this:

ignore the first bit and just watch from about 0:50 what he is doing is the equivalent to you having different volumes in your enclosure, see how you can hardly hear it to start, but when you hit a resonant frequency it becomes much much louder. Not that obvious with the girly tuning fork but i suppose you can get the idea!

Yeah, i guess they would have factored it into the calculations. Does it have to be the same volume, or can it be a multiple of that of the resonant frequency or wavelength, if that makes sense? :?
