I' love to, but it appears i'v done exactly the same thing wrong! haha! i'm waiting for some other bright spark to help you out. TBH, i think you'll be ok. I was chatting to a few other folk, and thet've had the same probs. As blue says, if it doesnt make any noise, you should be ok. Mine hasnt failed an mot yet for it either. Double check the part no's on the top mounts just to make sure they are correct

nothing to worry about m8 as long as its al back together the way it came off and everything is tight and there are no noises or that then its nothing to worry about because as i said think they sit proud a little bit anyway.

I had the same problem when replacing suspension on my mkII. Everything went back together as i took it off and when tightened, the cup sat proud like yr photo. I took out castle nuts and sanded them down, when i tightened the cups back up, the now 'lower' castle nut let the cup sit tight where it should. Cant say its the done thing but it let me tighten everything up with no gap. Hope this helps..

your supension does look ok from the pics tho,maybe your right with it ben wrong type,but as long as there is no noise, exess bounce, or wierd trye wear then you should be fine.Make sure that you bushes are ok and not worn

from what i can see your suspension looks correctly fitted. I've never known the top cup to sit flush on any of the polos I've owned.

there is nothing wrong with your topmounts, if the cups were perfectly flush it would damage the topmount even more. due to the design of the suspension leg and the caster, the damper shaft does not rotate in a static position, the base of the damper moves back and forth which requires the small gap. only problem i can see is the rounded off part at the top of the damper. it'll be fine, just be a bitch to undo.

it looks fine too me. the rubber topmount should be pressed up againts the underside of the turret. The metal cup should be nipped down to the weird nut that holds the top mount on, but should be clear of the top of the turret.

The pictures look fine to me,the gap is only there because the car's weight is squashing the top mount.

I can understand Marcus being concerned that its the wrong part because it was one piece,and he removed two pieces - because the old one was so shot that the bearing and rubber block had parted.

Mine has brand new TPS (VW's parts sector) post-90 mounts (because they said they no longer stock the pre-90 ones) and my top caps sit the same height from the turret as in those photos of Marcus' one.

When the car's lifted,the rubber expands to fill the void and stop it being loose.
