want a new car and i dont know if i should get a a diesel or petrol, got around 3000 to spend these are the options i come up with so far:

lupo 1.4TDi (can be remapped to 103bhp with 250nm torque) may be homo though

ibiza 1.9TDi 110 version (can be remapped to 135 with 300+nm torque)

mk2 golf Gti

i love mk2 GTi's but id love the modern(ish) luxury of the ibiza or lupo

any thoughts?..........

what makes you want a diesel? Are you doing a lot of miles? If not then I don't see much point considering a diesel, the petrol equivalent will always be more fun to drive if you ask me.

nah not doing lots of miles but they do shift once they've been remapped and they're cheaper on insurance than the petrols

is there a mk2 golf forum where there may be a few for sale so i could check out what i could get for they money? mk2's reliable?

Got to be a mk2 gti. Comfy enough, lovely to drive, and if you take it steady, it'll get in the 40mpgs, which means it'll probably cost as much as a deisel when you bear in mind derv costs more per litre.

But I'd still say a petrol is the only choice unless you are doing a lot of miles. A 200bhp diesel engine still isn't as much fun as a 200bhp petrol engine.

same question as above. I was thinking about getting a polo diesel instead of the 1.4 petrol. In the end didnt bother.

Tax- more due to doing over the 1.4 cut off.

Insurance- more due to being a group higher.

Parts- Lots of petrols about for spares.

Fuel- Diesel actually costs more than petrol at the pump remember, so unless you get a lot more miles, could cost about the same.

a diesel isn't always going to be half the price of the petrol equivalent at all. In fact they are often more expensive due to generally being worth a bit more if someone wants to nick it to sell it on.

yep diesels are quite abit more expensive to buy been looking around autotrader etc, it seems like they are more reliable though as you see alot with high mileage. don't know whether this is because they are used as long distance cruisers more than petrol though?

It's a combination of a number of things...yes, diesels are usually used for commuting and therefore will suffer less wear and tear, but then again diesel blocks are stronger than those found in their petrol powered siblings due to the significantly higher compression ratios they have to endure.

I still think in most cases, as long as initial price of the car doesn't come into the equation (which it will...) diesels will cost less to run per mile no matter how many miles you do.

As far as being more fun to drive...that's subjective.

I'm not sure how much BHP 16v MK2s put out...140ish? So they'll be faster down the drag strip than say an Ibiza 1.9 TDi which weighs the same if not slightly more than the Mk2, whilst "only" putting out 110 BHP. Then again, whilst it'll be faster from 0 - 60, I'd bet the Ibiza would be quicker from say 50 to 80 as it'll have the advantage in torque. Handling wise, stock vs stock, I reckon the Golf might have the edge...but once you've put springs/coilovers on either car (which I think you will), I'm not sure there'd be much in it.

Just thought I'd throw that in there. I'm not slating either type of engine - they've both got their advantages and disadvantages.

Diesels cost more to buy outright (but then hold their value better...), true. But I feel they'll always work out cheaper on fuel irrespective of miles done.

This is what my '53 plate 1.4 TDi Polo (mapped to 107 BHP) did on a 100 mile run (40% m'way, 30% town, 30% A road...so a good "mixed" consumption figure)

And yep, my MPG gauge is pretty accurate...I've checked it against the old school divide miles / fuel used over a tank and it's pretty much bang on. Reset the trip gauge before filling and it took 38 litres to fill up. Do the math and it comes to 457/8.35883 = 54.67 MPG over a tank, of which quite a bit is town driving. A lupo is significantly lighter, and would probably get 70 MPG on the same 100 mile run.

Say you use 10 gallons of fuel (~45 litres) in a 1.4 TDi, that's 540 miles. Therefore each mile would cost (45l x 105.2p)/540 = 8.77p/mile

If a 16v Mk2 Golf does 40 MPG, thats 400 miles using 10 gallons. Therefore each mile costs (45l x 103.3p)/400 = 11.62p/mile

Oh, and before I'm called biased, I also drive an 2.0T A3.

Also , kinda contradicting what I've been trying to say, I'd go with the Mk2 out of the OP's list of cars...purely because of the fact that the Mk2 is the coolest - full stop

whats your polo TDi like after its remap? the lupo Tdi's got the same engine hasn't it?

on the fuel consumption bit most of my driving is around town probably 10miles at a time so would a diesel still be better than petrol then or would they be similar mpg?
