Mikes GT breadvan

Featured Replies

I suddenly realised i dont have a permanent thread on my car here.

I started this thread:

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...=114470&hl=

long ago, and havnt updated since i got the car lowered.

Well since then the car has had a lot of work done since february, when i decided the camshaft had worn throught the head enough and it was time for a new head. With a lot of help from Giorgio (GiorgioGT), Chris (Cheys03) and Arun (Phataz), its survived to tell the tale.

The outside hasnt changed much.

Still 60mm drop all round on PhilJ shock and spring kit. Mk1 Golf CL front splitter, Mk3 Golf rear spoiler, side strips removed, tinted rear indicators, clear front indicators, clear side repeaters, chrome door handle inserts, pressed metal plates, front vw badge sprayed black, rear catalyst badge removed, mid era AA badge up front, 6N hubcaps sprayed gloss black, shitspeed exhaust tip, genuine wingard chrome bullet mirrors, chequered bonnet (wickes SA vinyl) various stickers and Branyl stripes down the bottom.

Inside has had a few changes. Now features a 280mm Moutney steering wheel on Momo boss, quite a lot of the stickers have been removed and the dash polished up. Still has some stickers remaining though, and a chrome and wood gearknob (soon to change) and a chrome handbrake handle (shitspeed too i think).

Biggest change has been the engine bay though.

It has had a new lower mileage head, with everything inside new (except camshaft, though i have a spare ready to go in...). It had a new alternator, blue temp sens, potentiometer, hall sender rotor arm and dizzy cap, different injectors, I've fitted a new cone filter (hellfrauds), removed the charcoal canister and some of the breather hoses, smoothed the throttle body elbow and sprayed it gloss black, sprayed the suspension tops and scuttle tray gloss black, exhaust manifold with VHT black, and cam cover in smooth silver hammerite.

Plans are:

Dismantle drivers seat and repad the side bolster where its collapsed.

And desperatley wheels! If anyones selling something that will not only fit, but that they think will suit it well, let me know :p

Cheers all.

Now looks like this:

Terrible scrubbage on all four wheels now though, even though i rolled up the arch lip on the back ones. Going to have to pull the arch and roll the inner lip further 2mz, and work the front ones too.

It also wobbles under acceleration over about 40mph. I've got 3 not so good spigots though so hopefully that and a tracking test will rectify that problem slightly. Though the rear suspension is going to have be raised too i fear in order to take stuff in the back and provide the front end with a touch more grip.

Still a lot of ironing out with these wheels, and i think it may end up tractor ride height which is a bit how it looks in pics now... but if you saw it at renegades tonight on full lock, you'd have seen how close the arches sit on those wheels.

that looks pretty slick, rather than mess around trying to pull the arches though you could just fit a set of tyres that wont rub, i.e. 165/50s

I love it Unc and you knows this

Lovely, lovely car!

I love the look of those stickers (don't usually like stickers!) but would hate to drive like that - I always find that checking my blind spot is an arse in the breadvan and I can't imagine how much of a pain it would be with all those stickers :D

  • Author

Cheers all.

g40jon, the tyres are 195/45 atm, would 50s be bigger and rub more? I could have tried to get lower profile 40s or 35s but they would have been near impossible to get hold of. Every garage told me it was difficult to get 15" tyres at that profile for some reason. Was a nightmare lol.

Thanks for the love :p

And yeah blindspot is pretty terrible tbh. Pulling onto dual carraigeways is impossible thanks to the bullet mirrors too. they're fine for town driving, but just dont scope far enough when your coming down a sliproad. I tend to pull on with my head out the window like a loon lol.

I deff need to get some more stickers anyway. Lots have faded since last year, or are falling off. And i think the fuel flap one has got to come off, starting to annoy me now. Though god knows what the paint is like under there now :p

List of things to do:

Rear suspension raised by 10 or 20mm (a shame i know but I've gotta carry my shit to uni and back)

Rip out the other inner arch rubber and replace the coathanger aerial while I'm there

Roll the lip on the front two arches, and roll the pass side rear one further

Flare the rear arches very slightly (5mm max i think will be needed) and probs the fronts too

Drivers side track rod end, Track control arm, and one of the outer CV joint boots.

Fit better spigots to 3 of the 4 wheels

Get the other three centre caps, remove the gash Wolfrace centre stickers and replace with VW ones

195's on a breadvan = scrubbage related fail.

Deffo get some 165's or some 14's or something.

you can work out the figures tez. the tyre wall will be 45% of 195 which = 87.75mm and on the 165/50s the wall will be 50% of 165, which is = 82.5mm

I've used 165/50 on a couple of breadies and have never needed to roll the arches

the other option you could use is to roll the arch with a scaffold pole between the arch and tyre

Nah i used a hammer and a crowbar :)

I have large rust holes in my arch lips :(

It wont be a fail, it will be a "if you aint scrubbin" etc win.

I'm not downsizing whatever happens. If they continue to scrub, more and more of the arch will dissapear thanks to Mr hammer. The arches were nackerd when i got them, so I'm not too bothered lol.

15" 6.5J wheels will fit on a breadvan!

Went down the unit last night to try and diagnose my mates 306 diesel starting problem.

Imo the car looks the sex. Gets so many looks from people now. Cant wait to get a can on the back so it sounds the business too.

Took the chequers off last weekend. Loads of the stickers inside and out have also been removed, and some of the spaces on the rear windows have been filled with newer better quality ones. Also got a debadged grille, blanked passenger mirror, and new red bumper stripes. On the inside it has new mats, new door pulls without the holes for the adjustable mirrors (which look class i must say) and everything has returned to black, other than my bright yellow fun stick. :)

I was just getting into enjoying the car everyday and now it seems the passenger side CV gaiter has died. There are very few garages locally i trust to do work any more, and i really cba with doing that job myself. One of the only things id get done at a garage.

very nice mike like it without the chequerd bonnet makes it look very clean

looks 10x better minus the chequers 8-)

looks very jdm :D , love it dude :)

Thanks all :)

Glad its getting some love.

Shame i missed the East coast dubs meet tonight though - suspension has decided to unseat itself on the passenger side (worn top mount i think), so its getting rebuilt 2mz. Wasnt the CV gaiter after all.

New top mounts, new track rod, new strut brace... might solve the problem eventually.

Heres my impression of a supercharger

Some pictures i took of mine at East Coast Dubs meet and the Tollgate meet afterwards last night.

I went with my mate Jizz in his lupo (soon to be running coillies). Jizz and myself will be getting very messy at edition at the weekend. We had a gateaux eating competition at a party on saturday. You have been warned :p

Some photos of my car at Edition.

I didnt take many pictures of the show area because there will be thousands of them all over the net. Most of my pictures are of things that others either didnt spot or werent interested in :p (So quite a few of my own car lol).

All in all, i had an amazing time at my first edition (and my first camp at vw show). Did 249 miles on 25 litres of BP super unleaded, which included about an hour of the car just running at the campsite for stereo and revving purposes over the course of the weekend. A few pumps from the suspension and the exhaust hitting the rear axle (will need some patching up i think soon - first job for mister arc welder!) and it lost a bit of gearbox oil no doubt. Other than that didnt let me down all weekend!

Me and jizz even slept in the car, GT seats fully reclined. Very uncomfortable but part of the fun!

So heres a few of mine.

Starting in Chelmsford, with the R5 that i convoyed with, and became part of the vw furniture for the weekend lol.

1_75.jpg

2_26.jpg

At the stand with the R5, the slut and friends :p

We had a great club stand position with the renegade dubs. Right at the entrance to the campsight, near the toilets and next to F6. Very busy!

3_16.jpg

4_4.jpg

5_1.jpg

And sporting the newest mod. Headlamp eyebrow bought from Frybert, as featured on Simons old GT square, with a bit of Azz in the side of the shot :p

6_8.jpg

And with Joels awesome caddy (for sale btw) and the infamous mint mk2.

7_3.jpg

If anyone else has pictures of mine (or me i guess lol) from the show, please post them up here :p
