why no home brew turbos

Featured Replies

i've owned a few makes of cars in my time but i've noticed that polo's especially mk3's and older very rarely get rebuilt to turbo ie pistons rods adaptor plate for 5gtt carb or similar etc etc is there any reason as i've always found small engine light weight cars with a nice turbo poke quite fun and people on here are a very knowledgeable group compared to a lot of sites????????

are they transplants or conversions? or am i being a knob as in not just typing it into that search thingy at the top of the screen ha ha i been away too long lol

are there any reliability issues with chucking a snail on the 1.3 carb engines or is it just a lack of interest in doing it at all lol

my missus is getting nervous now cuz i'm getting all curious about a 1.3 carb turbo mk 2 or 3 ha ha last time i did it it was a nova 1.3sr using a 5gtt carb and adaptor plate i worked in a metal shop so it happened quite cheaply but the rest of the car fell apart lol she went mad we ended up stck on asda roundabout ha ha good times

I guess no-one's seen much point in going through that effort to Turbo the normal engines when we've got the G40 already there...

no point trying to bodge something together when you can just put a g40 engine in and turbo that. I've seen a couple of people attempt turbo conversions with carbs etc... on here over the years, never actually seen one of them make light of day though. Would be interesting but not as good as a g40 engine with a turbo since a carb is always a compromise.

in all fairness its a sensible train of thought it just goes to show how fucked up my train of thought is lol the wife must be mental for putting up with it ha ha

i wouldn't say a carb is a compromise just a different school of mechanics there are some seriously powerful carb equipped engines but its all down to the fact of if you like mechanical or electrical which in a weird way means if you're old or not ha ha

when I say compromise I'm not talking about just power figures as yeah you could get similar or the same power figures using a carb but in my opinion you can't get the same combination of power, general driveability and fuel efficiency with a carb as with efi.

There's a guy who is either on here, clubg40 or both (can't remember!) who is doing a carb'd turbo conversion now. I think his username on whichever forum is tommo.

cheers i'll try and have a nosey

I remember watching a vid on youtube of someone G40ing a 1 litre polo didn't last lond mind....

it sounds stupid but in all honesty FUN ha ha

That was philj.

You do tend to see more performance oriented mods in other scenes, like mini's for example is all about the engine. Wheres with dubs alot of people don't bother in comparison (not everyone obv)

I'd like to see more engine stuff :)

i've been with vauxhalls for the last 18 months and thats all about the engine and suspension bodywork comes last lol

There is some real good engines in the mini scene I've had a 1293 putting out 95bhp at the flywheel and now my 1275 RSP cooper putting out 78bhp A series engines are so responive and rev happy.

no they're not.... they're just British Leyland shite!

so a highly modified 1.3 produced 95bhp.... the 1.4 16v polo produces 100bhp out of the box.

theres a fella in retro cars whos got a 300bhp 1.3 mini!!!! now thats some scary shit

A-series are junk. British Leyland? They were used to pump water in world war two - Alec Issigonis, who designed the original mini in the '50s didn't even want to use it then but didn't have the financial backing for a new engine at the time. He was promised one later, but the car never made enough money.

So he was stuck with an all-iron push-rod four cylinder unit with only two inlet ports and comically three outlet ports, camshaft driven by a tiny chain that inevitably stretches in no time even with duplex, the only reason you can get any power out of them is because so much after-market research and development has been done along with all the '50s,'60s and '70s motorsport (mainly rallying and track).

On the contrary,by the Leyland era they'd given up on the engine. Should've been left there, too.

in all fairness i haven't seen a 300bhp 1.3 vw engine yet???

with an a-series engine?!?

yeah an a series!!!!! and he runs a straight cut box iirc that he changes a cog now and then and it takes it, hes on the staff cars at retro cars mag its a monster mate

And i quote:

''310bhp from an A-Series, in a Mini? Surely photographer Matt Woods is off his rocker? There was only one real question: should we believe the hype?''

September 08 issue :)

no matter how its looked at that is an impressive achievement and deserves respect

I've done a bit of googleing and found it on a mini forum, the 310bhp is using nitrous. Still, it's apparently got 250bhp at the flywheel with the gas off so it's still bloody impressive to say the least from an ancient a-series boat anchor! ;) It's based on a metro turbo engine.

must be a vw small block knocking about somewhere with a comparable power quote, someone, anyone.......
