I was leaving somewhere late last nite and saw a police car in the distance, slowed down to the 30mph limit gradually so as not to raise suspition, passed the police car no problems, didnt follow me or anything, but i just wondered if patrol cars can just issue a ticket via the post nowadays if they dont want to follow you????

might sound like a really daft question but just thought id ask, also how far on average can them radar guns reach, cos i slowed grandually so may have been a couple of mph over when i was within range???

probably just paranoid but thought some of you might know....thanks

I would say they would of just stopped you.... You'll know soon enough though!

I think they are introducing cameras that work at night but if they are in use now I don't know.

from what i heard if its the handheld radar gun it has to clock you doing over the limit for a certain amount of time?? like you have to be speeding for more than just a few seconds, jsut so they can prove its an accurate reading

& even if they had caught you speeding, you would have been pulled there & then by those police or by some further up the road & been issued the fine then

they cant post a fine or anything cos the handheld radars arnt cameras, so they have no photos to use to prove you were speeding

i'm gonna buy a radar gun and start fining the police around my area i'd be rich within a week at the speed they cruise

Seriously I think if they were going to stop you and do you for speeding they would have done, it's technically still possible but very, very unlikely.

Was it a traffic car i.e. Vectra, BMW, Discovery or one of the beat cars e.g. Fiesta, Astra? If it wasn't a traffic cop I 100% guarantee you'll hear nothing!

sigh, stop worrying, buy a camera with a flash, go stand at a motorway bridge with a mate, have him on the far side. As cars come towards you, take a picture and get him to tell you how many are breaking when they come out the other side.

Nah it was one of them peugoet partner vans or citroen dispatchs in dark blue (never seen anything but white!?) with all the stickers n stuff on it, thats a relief though, i thought he would have had to pull me over, cos obviously there was no picture evidence for a postal fine, but thought id still check anyway, cheers fellas youve put my mind at rest

they wouldnt chase you in one of them vans as they'd never keep up with you!

Yeah, they often use those back home. Basically a bloke stands by it with a handheld speed gun, does your speed when you come out of a bend, then either waves you down or the traffic car a bit further down the road picks you up.

They have to pull you there and then though, they can't post a fine. Which breeds the fine art of suddenly changing direction
