to stop rotting happening as fast i heard

at the factory, probably spain for you, they dip the shell in wax to seal it and stop it from rusting from the inside out.

hence why on warm days you can still spot the wax running out the shell in various drainage points.

always a good thing, except on golf mk3's where the drainage holes in the doors occasionally get blocked up and then they rust on the sills inside.
