going to be the first car I've ever brought,

what do i need to look out for in general and for this type of car?

gearbox's...there shit lol. as you drive along if you hear it grinding either loudly or quietly its an expensive fix...

there prone to rusting, check the rear wheel arches and if it has a sunroof, check the roof around it and open it up to see if there is any rust around it.

they have plastic inlet manifolds so if the car is searching for revs then (as my old one was) could be melted.

Yeah the gearboxes are rubbish, usually the mk4's don't go in to 1st or reverse very well i've found. As long as it's not bad then just use it as a bargaining tool. The elec windows are usually pap but no big deal.

And as with any car make sure its not using lots of water or oil because headgaskets are an arse.

all my vw's have been off old people, best way really then you know and can tell when driving they haven't been shagged lol

i normally buy un-modded cars unless like my current one i know the old owner, i try not to buy cars from old people as far too many people i know blow the engines as the granny would only do 30mph max in it and the engine wasnt used to it lol!
