going to look at a potential first car soon,

its a mk4, one litre (as insurance is too high being only 17 and wanted to mod) , 5 months tax, 5 months MOT, the usual etc.

the man did say that very rarely when trying to turn the engine on, it wont start so has to turn key off and start again.

he said its the starter motor ring, with knowing very little about the engine etc, was just wondering if this does sound like the problem and how much would it be for a new one?

How does he know it's the starter motor ring?

Ask him if it uses much water or oil. How much is it? How many miles?

he said, no overheating, doesnt use much oil etc

its £700 and 126k miles, the 126k miles put me off at first but I'm only planning on keeping the car a year for experience etc.

does the problem sound like a sticky starter solanoid?

Could be the solanoid or the starter on its way out. New starters are around £90.

and £90 :/ i cant afford another £90 ontop of the £700, then insurance etc :(

What trim level is it? You could keep looking or haggle with him. Theres plenty of mk4's about :-)

i think he doesnt let it prime, when u turn on the ignition, you wait a few seconds then turn it over

he may be just turning it over straight away, ask him

I would personally keep looking, it took me a 3weeks - a month to find mine

its an hour drive away from my house so I'm not sure whether to go and have a look or not

i dont think its the starter motor , id say it needs new plug leads. the reason it will take afew times to start will be becuase of missfiring.also i wudnt buy that car I'm usre of auto trader u can get something between 50k and 80k for about the same price or alittle more just save. its worth it

yeah mine was a bit over an hour away, but i knew it was the one as i had been looking for weeks and weeks, viewed it, then went back the next day to pick it up, if that was his price in the first place, he will go down AT LEAST 50quid, maybe even get him down by over 100, when you view just point out all the things that could lower the value of the car so they know you meen buisness, however minor that could be.

but if your having second thoughts, just keep looking, it will pay off bigtime.

If you pm me some details about the polo you are looking for, colours, price range, Mk, what erea you are form, i can always have a look and keep my eye out for you.

i was thinking though, if it needs this, how would it have passed the MOT?

yeah, my sisters boyfriend is coming tonight, and he has a keen interest in cars so ill see what happens.

if he doesnt budge then i think ill just walk away and keep searching for something better.

i would say that cars about £250 too much. there isnt much mot left on it and its a 1 litre, so not very easy to sell on as hardly anyone wants then due to them being so slow.

the mk4 is prone to wearing out the ignition switch which results in the car sometimes not turning over

Absolutely disagree - 1 litre cars are very easy to sell, and in great demand for exactly the reason that the OP wants his; for his first car.

There's always a market for sub-£1k 1.0-1.3l cheap to insure cars, as they're good for first cars. That's exatly why the guy's charging £700 for a 1.0l when you could get a GT for less, and why the op is considering it.

that well to much m8. i paid 550 for a mint 16v with 90k with yrs mot n 6 mths tax

how can you possibly diagnose a problem like this over the internet and come up with a conclusion like that? he says that it doesn't turn over some times and it could be the starter motor sticking... what would that have to do with the HT leads?

the starter motor keeps sticking, i don't think this is a starter motor problem, the reason it won't start is because of a loose wheel nut...
