Hi people,

I bought this as my first car in 2007; I was originally looking at buying a brand new VW Fox, but at the last minute thought 'I could buy an oldschool VW instead though...' and looked up on the net to find out what was on offer in my area.

Somehow while looking at mk4 polos I stumbled across a mk2 polo breadvan on ebay, and instantly knew it was EXACTLY the car for me! On top of that, it was only ten minute's drive from my house!

1.0L, 4-speed, 31,000 miles!

I bought the car without having driven it - having only ever driven modern driving lessons cars with power steering and 5 gears I had no idea what I was getting myself into!

I had the head gasket done, but now the head needs skimming; it's not too bad but it will need doing in the next few months.

I replaced the brake pads and disks, and discovered that it had the original pads/disks on. the pads were stamped 'VW 1987' :)

Then I picked up a set of ATS classics for £200. With the classics it scrubbed like hell on the back and looked so high like a 4x4!

I also decided to modernise the sound system, but went for clarity rather than volume with only high-end equipment. it's basically all Alpine Type R stuff, and sounds great although I'd like to stealth the cd player at some point and stick the old retro one back in!

Next thing was to stick it back on the steels and lower it! It's now sitting 60mm lower than before and drives MUCH nicer - beforehand the drivers side sat 20mm lower and now it's all equal : )

Of course I had to keep it retro so bought some battered up old 13" moondisks off ebay and stuck them on and LOVED the look!

So here's how it sits now

Plans:

Buy some new moondisks (anyone know where I can buy some?)

Book it into the bodyshop to have the arches flared, and get it back on the ATS Classics, but maybe with lower profile tyres.

Rarely see a silver mk2 bread. That looks clean as mate, fair play for giving the old skool a look, apart from nothing in the way of brakes i bet your loving it!?!

may sound stupid, but how did u go about taking the bumpers of did you literally remove them and its left looking like that?I've got a mk 2 and it needs some style.. cheers

As much as I love it on the moondiscs I'm afraid I've got to stay true to my original plans and so on that note:

It's booked into the body shop! Going in on the 14th july (2 weeks today) to have all 4 arches flared for £250.

That doesn't include paint though - I'm going to drive it around in primer for a week to make sure the arches are just right, and then it's going to go in for paint a few weeks after : )

they're 13" Moondisks on the original steels - tyres are original size 175/80/13 :)

Shame it's gonna loose that look soon,its a good thing you didnt cling onto old ideas with the car,so I'm surprised you're still intent on doing so with the wheels,despite finding such a stunning and timeless look.

To be fair though,the classics do suit it well. Its gonna look good either way.

Incidentally,the '80s Saab moondiscs fit onto Golf 14s and look great with 165x60 tyres under undamaged arches - not easy to get hold of though,apparently.
