As much as I love it on the moondiscs I'm afraid I've got to stay true to my original plans and so on that note:

It's booked into the body shop! Going in on the 14th july (2 weeks today) to have all 4 arches flared for £250.

That doesn't include paint though - I'm going to drive it around in primer for a week to make sure the arches are just right, and then it's going to go in for paint a few weeks after : )

Shame it's gonna loose that look soon,its a good thing you didnt cling onto old ideas with the car,so I'm surprised you're still intent on doing so with the wheels,despite finding such a stunning and timeless look.

To be fair though,the classics do suit it well. Its gonna look good either way.

Incidentally,the '80s Saab moondiscs fit onto Golf 14s and look great with 165x60 tyres under undamaged arches - not easy to get hold of though,apparently.

Don't worry! I can always get some banded steels in the future and clip on the moondisks if I want to

I'm getting quite nervous about putting my pride & joy in the hands of a body shop! Only a week to go and I'm trying not to think about it

Those steels are TINY compared to the classics!

It looks like they might still scrub but if they scrub anywhere it will be on the inside of the arch on big bumps - I'm not bothered about that though as long as they're legal and the arches cover the wheels which they do!

He's finishing them off and doing the fronts this afternoon and hopes that they will be finished by this evening ready to pick up!

The classics are 7J wide. I also considered the mk1 golf arches but decided it was too much work, and too expensive. If they were 8J I would definitely think more seriously about the golf arches!

yup it's just a skim ready to be sanded - the arches had a little rust on them and needed a skim of filler before prep just to make sure it's all flat :)

Wasn't it obvious that it was going to be sanded? :p Why would I have a mint polo but leave the arches covered in messy filler?!

And I'm not driving it like that - that's an in progress shot. I will have the car back from the body shop on Friday, with all the arches sorted.

The rear arches need pulling out another 10mm or so, which means I've got to take it back to the body shop on monday for more work! Looks like we might have to cut/pull/weld new metal in in order to get it right!

Unfortunately I'm not gonna be able to make it to poloshow - Maybe next year when if all goes to plan there will be a GT engine under the bonnet :)

You could swap the tyres over from your steels for some free and insane stretch

Yeah but that would mean REALLY big stretch and I don't want the wheels to look lost in the arches! And besides I'm not a huge fan of the stretched look!

Back from the body shop!

Stu at S.Jago Designs in chichester (PM Me for his number I cant remember it off the top of my head) did a great job on the arches, and now it runs great! I'm going to get some lower profile tyres though to ensure that there's 0 scrubbing even when it hits the bump stops!

I'm considering Nankang 165/55/13 tyres, which I've heard are good in the dry but pants in the wet - will this be a problem though if they're only on a 1.0?

what did they actually do to the rear arches then mate? Looking nice. Whats the width and offset of the classics?

They split the panel along the edge above the bumper all the way to the end of the panel just before the light cluster. They then pulled the whole arch out almost 4cm and welded in new metal to fill in the gap at the back. A quick skim of filler kept everything straight as possible and they then primed it. The result is a much, much wider arch. The wheel only scrubs on the inner arch now when I hit speedbumps too fast!

Took some rattle cans to the arches. It's just a temorary measure but I think it really shows for the first time, the fantastic job that Stu at S.Jago Designs has done on the arches!
