Henry's MK2 GT Breadvan 'Chip'

Not funny at all doing that to a Genuine GT!

Nah the car would have taken far too much work to restore; the floor's full of rust. In fact, part of the reason I bought it for the conversion is I knew I couldn't justify breaking a good condition original GT for a conversion.

Besides, you've used GT parts before; they've come from genuine GTs so don't get on your high horse about it lol! :) ;)

4-2-1 stainless steel manifold arrives tomorrow (from philJ on here!)

Can't wait to see it :)

Nice work man!! Car will be cool as funk. We put a GT engine in my mk2 coupe and it was like a different car. So much more fun. I had the same manifold on too :-)

All the best with it.

When you hoping to have it back on the road??

lol ok i trust you that it was a heap. You get it off here then? nice manifold man, them welds are awsome. Nearly as good as mine.

Fitted my bonnet lifters in my lunch hour - they seem to work great, but are in need of a little grease to stop them squeeking! :)

So, today saw the dashboards and looms out of both cars :) I'm too lazy to rewrite all of this, so I'll copy and paste Rich's post from dubscene.net

Update time! I let Henry do the camera-ing, as you can probably see from the zillion pics of dark, flash on my jacket and engine (nah, he's a pro really :D )

Henry started stripping out his Mk2 dash:

I got flashed! :o :

IMG_5459.jpg

..And then helped remove some troublesome brown cableties..

IMG_5460.jpg

Dash out..

IMG_5461.jpg

We found a 1980's DMark stick to the bulkhead insulation foam inside the dash! :o

IMG_5465.jpg

IMG_5466.jpg

I nabbed the 2F dash brackets..

IMG_5467.jpg

So we could try this :) :

Trying different steeringwheels whilst having a tea beerbreak.

Flattering shot of me prodding some wiring:

Mk2 Bulkhead devoid of all loom, Nice and clean!

IMG_5480.jpg

IMG_5481.jpg

At close of play today, we have stripped the dash loom from the Mk2, removed the entire loom forwards for the bulkhead from the 2F and started to sort out what wires need splicing as per the rest of the looms. Going to have to swap the ignition switch plugs, and the plug for the front to back loom. Otherwise plain sailing! :)

looks cool, like the classic's better than the moondisks

frybert - yeah I hope so!

da_flo - thanks for the info :)

Today we got the engine stripped down, and with a lot of white spirit, elbow grease, and then some wire wheels, got it all cleaned. Painted the block black.

I'm knackered now, but tomorrow is going to be a very busy day - we've got loads to do to get this car back on the road. Fingers crossed all will go to plan; with Rich in charge everything seems to go smoothly so all should be good! :)

Had a crazy day today - Big thanks to Clarky and Baxter for helping out, and obviously Rich is doing an awesome job (at the conversion, and at resisting the urge to strangle me :D )

I'm just exhausted from 3 days of hard work - it's definitely a change from my usual daily routine of sitting around on a computer!

Only a couple of pics from me tonight, as I'm off to sleep.

Got 'em from ebay a while back - they're very hard to get hold of!

Good news! G-laderseite ARB mounts are here, and they came in a box with a bar of german chocolate biggrin.gif

Here's some pics

Yesterday:

Rich made a bracket for the fuel pump.

One bracket for the fuel pumps was the wrong length, so, Template..

IMG_5505.jpg

Metal. Looks a bit wobbly but its thick ol' steel and was a little hard to bend in the vice. Done though!

IMG_5506.jpg

Its rubber mounted, just not in the rubbish way that VW did it so when the rubbers perish and snap the fuel pump falls off..

IMG_5507.jpg

Then he got the 5 speed selector box in so it has some sembelance of some gears..

IMG_5508.jpg

And then he started to make the alledged G40 system fit, which it wouldn't, so he cut it up in rage. (only kidding, more progress soon, making the front section from scratch)

IMG_5509.jpg

Now, on to last night!

Dash is half in! Finaly!

IMG_5510.jpg

And I brought these round for him to fit. Bloody buggers to fit, had to use a Rover Mini sill jack as a strongarm to hold the ARB forward in the right place.

But..

IMG_5511.jpg

Its got us that all important manifold clearance ;)

IMG_5512.jpg

In other news the cooling system is all plumbed in and just needs antifreeze in it now. :)

sweeet, cant wair to see the finished product

Got 'em from ebay a while back - they're very hard to get hold of!

ah right, can only find em in 13" from usa and its like $50 to deliver. are yours 13" i guess.

yeah they're 13"s.

Car is now running and on the road - just going for a new custom exhaust system today and will be on the rolling road by Saturday morning :D

Rich drove it down to the garage he works at in Larchwood today, big thanks to the guys there as the work today would have taken an age otherwise.

Got the exhaust welded up. It now has a vertical backbox as it fitted nicer :)

Got the passenger door handle de-locked as the lock was buggered.

Got the wiring fitted nicely under the carpets.

Got the acess hole under the rear seat fitted.

Cleaned the crap out of it.

Set the clutch.

Set the gearchance.

Fitted the smaller front tires.

Fitted the Mk1 Golf duckbill chin spoiler

Painted the tired grille satin black and applied red pinstripe to the lower edge.

Cleaned the GT badge.

Sorted the O/S/R disco lights.

Got the horn working.

Got the reverse lights working.

Got the windscreen washers working.

Got the Rear foglamp working.

Just need to fit a new temp gauge in the dash pod, new dashpod bulbs, fit spire clips to the centre console screwholes, refit the more apt amber front indicator lenses and stick a new gearlever gaitor on it. :)

Took some okish photos in the workshop:

Lovely car mate!

looks amazing.

n00b question! what are the front lights from?

  • Author

Cheers!

The lights are from a Derby : )

Went to a rolling road day at JKM in portsmouth yesterday, and dyno'd the car, only a day after finishing the conversion. Had an awesome day and won the 'car of the day' award. I'm REALLY pleased with the bhp figure!

Here's a quick update on the GT's progress :)

The polo was debuted at the www.dubscene.net rolling road day. It was an awesome day at JKM in Portsmouth. I was really pleased to win the award for 'car of the day' which was voted for. :)

I'm really pleased with how it came out! I had to sand/grind down the '1.4' and add a modern spec GT badge in its place. Next job is to finish polishing a 6n rocker cover, and get that on it. Then just general cleaning and detailing work to be done :)
