Rear camber after lowering?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Tried searching but found nothing helpful.

Basically, after dropping my 6n2 about 70-80mm all round on coilovers (and fitting new wheels) i have have a fair amount of camber on the rear. Is this normal after lowering?? Or have i done somthing wrong when fitting?

I gather that there is no way to adjust the rear camber with out using shims as the rear axle and hubs are fixed, so why have I suddenly got camber after lowering?

Any info much appreciated :)

Cheers,

Bruce.

well i lowered mine about 80 - 100 mm matey and i got loads of neg camber on the front, but the rears where fine, theres something wrong there surely if your getting camber on the back as i thought that it was a fixed setup on the rear of polos

You always get rear camber when lowering, don't really know how considering its a rear beam but you do

I wouldn't worry about it, will only improve handling (albeit ever so slightly) and is probably so small won't notice much wear on the tyres

well i know i didnt get any neg camber on the rear when i lowered my polo, it was the fronts that i had massive amounts, and if you were to get rear camber then how do you correct it as its a fixed setup??

If there is loads of negative camber on the front then it is setup wrong, they are adjustable by unbolting the bottom 2 bolts on the bottom of the strut which you should then be able to move back and forward, to change the camber.

There is always at least 1 negative degree camber on the rear from factory. You don't really need to change it to be honest, unless its silly amounts like more then 2-3degrees

Cheers for the replies chaps. I'll try and get a pic up later, see if you think its too far out.

They only reasons I can think of are, that I've fitted them wrong but the rears are dead straightforward so dunno how I would have managed that!

Or, the fact I've gone for wider wheel which has made it more noticeable? I'm running schmidt ML's 15x8 et25. You reckon that would make it look more negative?

Cheers,

Bruce.

if you end up with loads of neg camber on the front, it hasnt been setup wrong. Its inevitable that you will mess up the camber and tracking when lowering. But what i dont understand is you said that you will always get neg camber on the rear, which i thought wasnt possible so i was saying how do you adjust the camber on the rear as its a fixed setup so you cant just undo the nuts on the strut to hub mounting plate and simply pull the hub out.

m8 I'm fitting the same wheels and coilies on wednesday i will let uno how things go!

when u fitted your kit did u need to switch around any springs at all i bought the ta technix and for some dodgy reason i got two spare spings! what have u done?

Umm what do you mean spare springs?! You shouldnt need to change anything over.

Got a picture?!

i have rear camber I'm running about 110mm all around on my 6n2 dude,

the lower you go the ore camber you get as your puttting more pressure on the wheels.

Well thats wrong, theres no more pressure on the wheels at all, as the weight of the car hasnt changed. You get camber because the geometry has changed. Think of a trapezium, The top and bottom sides will stay the same length, but when you lower, your essentially shortening the sides. If you draw it, you'll see that the angles at the bottom and top of the shape will decrease, hence camber

Are those springs the helper springs by any chance?

I was on about the adjusting the front. And meant it has been setup wrong if you have had the camber and tracking done, which I don't know if you have or not.

As said, the camber on the rear is not adjustable, and the only ever changes that people make are to increase the negative camber for tyre clearance issues by using camber shims.

And also yes it will be more noticeable with wider wheels

You should always go and have your camber and tracking done after lowering and after changing wheels (only if changing wheels to a bigger or smaller size.

The fact of the camber is as stated above by prankstar, you will always have your camber affected by going lower.

Just take it to your local garage and they should do tracking and camber for around the £30 mark.

na m8 not the helpers!!! aperrently i have to swap the two srings in the front with the ones that were spare spoke to phil and all is clear now aperrently sometimes they supply a set of thinne springs for a 6n! I'm fitting them 2mro! did u replce your top mounts to? if u did are u sure they are the right ones?

Ah thats cool then. Nah i didnt do the top mounts on mine as they had been done by the previous owner not long before i bought it and were still in damn good nick. But you might as well change them while you're at it if they haven't been done before.

Wish you luck with changing them tomorrow. Its not a huge job, just take your time and all will be fine.

all done m8! i had to change the srings over like phil said but that was at the front!! phill said aperrently sometimes they supply both 6n and 6n2 spring 2g4 but i cant understand y u will have camber if u fiited everything properly at the back as they are the same as the ones on 6nS! my coilovers are wound all the way don and i dont have no problems! went on and fitted like a treat! my rears are fine! i swapped springs at the front! soo i cant c y u have loads of neg camber! u will need to roll your archs thpugh they do rub a treat! lol low and very slow!
