I have only been using the forum for a few months, and as a semi-competent amateur mechanic, i'm amazed that people are asking such rudimentry questions, that are covered in the hyanes manual. Do people not buy them anymore? Most people on this forum obviously have an interest in cars and DIY, so why dont they have a manual? Its the first thing i always buy when i get a car, and always will be. It seems that people are just relying on people to give them the answers, without doing any work themselves. I can understand with the more complex jobs and customization, but i'v just read a post on 'when to change cam-belt'. Simple answer, buy a manual and stop wasting my time!

I can now see why some of the more regular users get annoyed at the innane questions that come up. I'm all for spreading knowledge, as no doubt i require quite a bit myself. But i do look in the haynes for the simple things. Plus people will learn more by investigating things themselves.

Rant over i guess, and i suspect this may spark some backlash, mostly from the folk who cant be arsed to look at a fucking book!

You have take into account, this 'forum' is used mainly by poor students. I think they would rather buy a few more drinks than a car maintainence book

tbh i agree with you, its half the reason i cant be bothered to look at the tech section anymore. the excuse about the manual costing money is bull, you can pic them up for a fiver off ebay or if you have no morals you can often find pdf versions on the net for free

First thing i bought after buying my MK6...Haynes manual, been great with little bits and pieces so far!

your right- i think it is easier for some people the have an idea.. and post it on here before they have thought about it, done any research, or even clicked on 'Search'.

So we spend all day telling people where to get insurance, how to remove bump strips and badges, and what seats will fit in a 6n.

first thing I always get when I get a different car is the haynes manual for it!

It annoys me too when people ask really simple questions like how to change brake pads etc... which can just be looked up in a haynes. Plus with a haynes you get all the pictures too.

Not having the money isn't an excuse you're saving a fortune doing the work yourself, if a student can afford to run a car then they can afford £15 for a book on how to cheapy maintain it if you ask me (and yes I have been a student and when I was a student there was no way I could afford to buy and run a car).

It's one of the essential tools for the job when you are starting out doing some spannering, these days I only look at the haynes for a mk3 polo for torque settings or wiring diagrams but years ago when I first started out messing with them I used it loads.

They are both different forms of getting the same result. If you are using the Haynes manual, you are relying on the person who wrote the manual to give you the answer. Why not post in the tech section? Plus often the Haynes manuals can be wrong! Not saying that you can't get duff info off the forum mind.

The thing i like about the forum is picking up different and better ways to do stuff that people have already come across.

Cant go wrong with a Haynes tbh, would save alot of time and space on here. There's always gonna be car specific things that arent covered in there, but its a very handy thing to own.

without actually sticking your head into the haynes, searching around on here and actually first and foremost, having a look at your own fucking car, then youd actually understand what people are talking about when they are replying to your posts!

I usually have a Haynes and have used it to do brake pads and services.

One thing i will say is it's about time Haynes started using colour photos..sometimes on a more difficult job i look at the picture and cant make head nor tail of it!

Totally agree with Simon too - Haynes manuals are essentials for your own car,you need to just investigate your way around the problem on any car and its not practical to get one for working on random cars,but for your own one you've got tips/help/experience on every aspect of the one car you're going to need it all for.

Wow, quite a response. I understand what folk are saying about diff opinions and ways of doing things, but most folk dont appear to have had a go at some of the simple things. These are covered in the manual.

I'm scared now, in case i ask a dumb question, and look like a 'gooch' (Mega- btw at that!)

solid brakes lines only + movable rear beam + any road surface = mega braking fail

like some one already said reading a Haynes is no different from getting info from here or other forums, its just info that some one has written about a certain subject. i suppose you could always delete all the tech section info and make it so when some one clicks on the engine (ect) section it takes them to an ebay link to a Haynes manual?

Totally agree. First thing I bought was my Haynes manual because I wanted the independence of doing jobs on my own car.

I just love getting stuck in with it anyway and have learned GREATLY as I've gone along. I've got to the stage where I change my own timing belts etc...albeit that I drop my engine down on 2 jacks and a few rocks...but it still worked haha.

End of the day, I see no excuse not to purchase a Haynes manual unless you know fully what you are doing and/or are willing to get stuck in and do it yourself first.

how is it laziness? it takes more effort to come inside, start up the pc log on to a forum, type out a question and wait for the answer... surely its lazier to just open up a book?

besides i'm already paying for internet access and due to that i have the info i need (in one shape or form) on tap, the only reason i have the net is for car matters and porn, if i'm not gonna use it to its full extent to get info on cars i might as well just stock up on my dvd collection and cancel my connection

I suppose people will use it for different reasons, but to me it seems lazy. And in that answer you have said its easier to use a book. Like i said, its the simple things that are covered in a book. I personally see it as further reliance on other people, the internet and technology in general. Just call e a dinosaur
