I don't think it's hypocritical, you can read up on bike carbs and engine tuning etc. - but as for finding out which mods fit most easily, what the results were like and such the forums are great.

I've got 2 Haynes manuals for each of my cars - one copy for reading on the bog before a job, and an oily copy for the garage! Admittedly the Polo one only really gets used for torque figures, but it still gets used.

hahaha - no wonder i get an oily arse so much of the time... I only have one copy.

Yeah,you can definately self-teach using one,they guide you through and practice makes perfect.

The jobs are rated for difficulty,so stick to easy ones to start with.

I think the main point of this topic was for people who ask questions like..

"What oil do i need for my car?"

"Which of the two oil sensors is for low pressure?"

"What are the torque settings for head bolts on a 1.0 6n?"

"Which way around do the HT leads go in the dizzy cap?"

"What bits do i need for a MK2 ignition set-up?"

"What relay is for intermittent wipers?"

Etc,etc,etc - and all this info is at the flick of a page in the Haynes manual. Simples.

I have four different Haynes manuals for my hybrid Polo,and have used the '03 Golf/Bora book a few times for help (wiring colours and measurement specifications),the MK2 for most original things,the facelift one for spec reference,and the 6n one for some AEE references.

They've made my life alot easier.

As i said earlier in the thread, i did lots of major work on mine with just that and a little hand from the dad! But that was more for techniques (such as removing rusted bolts etc.) rather than polo expertise. Definately worth getting one though.

As regards later editions, they seem to take ages to come out these days. And i'm not sold on the quality these days. Then again, i'd be reluctant to work on a newer car due to all the electrics etc. But for simple stuff, still cant beat them!
