Was just curious, my mate owns the exact same model polo as me but his is older his is an 04 reg, the polo is very slow, but he is stating now he is putting a turbo in it.

is this possible???

you can put 1.8 20valve turbo's from an audi S3, TT etc straight into the 9n without any modifications. only upgraded mounts and a fabia vrs gearbox housing with cogs from a leon cupra R.

with a remap, they go up to 280bhp.

hmm... although i dont think he mentioned the cogs and gear box, i think he was just on about a turbo getting installed.

If he only said a turbo was getting put in, its gotta be shit. Theres quite abit more stuff that he'd have to do to get it to even run. Compression ratio would be wrong for starters.

yeah but it's not worth it in this case. you would have to change the internals, etc etc. if he wants a faster car its easier to put a bigger engine in it. I have the same car, with the 1.2 liter engine. that engine is built for economy not speed. mind you it's still pretty nippy especially considering the amount of speakers in the trunk

I totally agree, was just answering the OP's comment that he didn't seem to think it was actually possible to put a turbo onto that engine.

I think my turbo has gone on my vw polo 9n 1.4tdi would it be possible to put a turbo from a audi s3 onto my diesal? I am into my cars but don't know enough for technical issues.

^^ if you turbo has gone replace it with the same type, simples....

the diesel will have a garret vnt unit on there, the S3 will have a Ko4 unit.... the diesel ones operate at something like 3 times the boost pressure

I have been getting quotes for a normal turbo for my car and I'm getting back like £600? Anyone tell me if i can get it cheaper from anywere?

I really dont know where people get the impression that you just can stick a turbo on a engine well you can but its not as simple as you think, you need to consider cooling, Compression, ecu etc as it has been said its not worth the amount of work for not much gain when you could just drop a bigger block in. :)

my mate supercharger his 1,6 gti lupo, it cost him between 15000-20000 to do it, including buying the car so minues 7000 from that and you will see how much it cost to actually super charge it. taken about 2 years to get set up and running well, and still has some issues. not worth it in my opinion...buy a cosworth instead or something lol

You are saying it cost your mate between £8000 and £13000 to supercharge his Lupo? I'm guessing that's including labour somewhere extortionate because there is no way in hell it should cost that!

He designed a lot of it himself like the bracket,tensioners, ic, collant system for charger, worked out the compression. Designed the pistons and rods. Most of it. Ge forged internals etc etc. Then lots of mapping sessions and custom parts later. It was probably closer to 8k-10k to actually charge it. But the car defo owes him between 15-20k with it's resprays new wheels and respray of wheels. Basically he is famous in the lupo forum world for it lol. 200bhp a really loud eaton charger and 2 years later he still isn't quicker then my g40 and my mate in his 205mi16 with 140bhp from wheels craps on it all day lol.

Yeah, lots of time and money and effort. looks nice and will be in may or junes edition of golf+ but a bit of a marmite for me. the lesson from this is that if the guy wants to put a turbo in the 1.2 unless he has got money and doesnt mind pissing a lot of it away, or is trying to give it all mr big wig.

Its a Garrett Gt1544 and its wastegated, not VNT, common misconception.

There's not much else you can replace it with without modification, all the bigger diesel engines run VNT turbos, and most are actually part of the exhaust manifold, which you can't just swap either as the 1.4 is a 3 cylinder engine. I've heard people putting a four runner exhaust mani/turbo on this engine and welding up the fourth runner, but then you also need to install an N75 valve and get it all mapped into the ECU, so yeah, no real 'plug and play' replacement.

As said above, petrol engines run different compression ratios and have differently spaced vanes, so dont really work on deisel engines.

if your lacking boost check your wastegate actuator isn't stuck open, and get someone to check the MAP and MAF sensors through the diagnostics port (could try cleaning them first??).

just a quick point the new polo has a 1.2 turbo 105bhp and i would imagine its probably the same engine so yes it can be turbo'd ,no it would not be a waste of time and I'm sure if it is the same engine you could just get the parts for it and do something to reduce the compression ratio at the end of the day if he loves that car he can spend ridiculous money on it or he could just buy a faster car.
