Calling those that have done an engine conversion

Featured Replies

I have almost completed my engine conversion and was wondering what people have done about theres? I converted a polo gt into a G40.

I went onto pistonheads to get a g40 number plate to see the difference in insurence price between a registered G, or a quote where I just claimed all the mods done to my Gt (this included a non standard engine). When I typedin the number plate of that vehicle into confused.co.uk it wasnt even registered as a g40, was registered as a 1.0l genesis!

This makes me wonder, how many of you actually reregister your cars with the dvla after a conversion?? this would subsiquently mean a vehicle check in some circumstances, and a point scoring system possibly resulting in your car being a 'Q' plate.

What what are you guys out there doing with all your reshells and conversions? Has anyone been stopped n there non registered conversion by the fuz? Or at worst anyone had a crash?

The whole process seems very long winded, apparently can last upto 6 weeks to get your documents back! Is this true?

Cheers

I have never done a conversion- but just from ebay/trader/piston heads, I know how many times I have seen a car that has had a new lump fitted, much bigger than original and seller states that log book has not been changed.

Its a pain in the bottom, it really is completely stupid with a capital F. Just like not declaring any mod, and there are bucket loads of people who dont declare anything.

I think we all know how i feel on the matter...

You can't easily make a G40 conversion a 'G40' for the model change with the DVLA. If you re-shell with a brand new unregistered shell from VW, then it can be done.

If you want it done with a doner already registered shell, then it will become a Q-plate G40. I'm only aware of one Q reg G40 though.

Most people like myself just change the cylinder capacity and engine number on the V5 and leave it at that. For insurance purposes, they just insure it as group 15 like a G40.

do you do this by ringing them or filling out the v5?

it won't be a q plate, you get a company to write a letter on headed paper by a tech stating that engine number + capacity is fitted in said shell and they chang the log book. not sure what it would say but at the very least the cc would change - model would stay the same though.

i once had a astra mk2 gte fitted with a 1.3 ohc which i registered and it came back as a 1300cc gte! lol!

You don't even have to get a letter from an installer if you are just changing the engine number and to the same/larger CC, just fill in the V5 relavent section. If you put in a smaller cc engine then you will need third party confirmation though, for taxation reasons.

right so from what I gather from this is that a lot of people dont declare it. Say I fill in the section on the V5 stating the change in engine code, and capacity, but say the shell is the same, you guys are saying it will probably come back as the same model just with a different engine code and capacity on the new V5?

From the point of view of insurence, do I need to declare that it has had a non standard engine conversion after reregistering?? Or just leave it as it says on the V5 and use the Reg on the quote and see what it comes out with?

How should I expect this to affect my insurence?

Also, why would I change then capacity on the v5 isnt the 1.3 gt 1272cc the same as the G40? or am I wrong?

The DVLA couldn't careless if your polo is a GT, G40 or CL etc. It's the insurance companies you need to inform its got a G40 engine in when geting quotes.

You only need to change the cc on the V5 if you are eg 1043cc to 1272cc

So, when getting quotes I have to declare that the car had a nonstandard engine conversion? Insurence will love me lol

you tell the DVLA the new engine code, that is all. Unless the base car was a different engine capacity in which case they'll also want to know that but a GT or any 1.3 mk3 are the same capacity as a g40 so it doesn't matter.

As for insurance costs, it depends on the company and they are the only people who can really answer the questions. In some cases it'll work out cheaper than an original g40, in other cases more, in other cases no different.

I'm with Brentacre for mine (which is a G40 converted GT), they just set a BHP limit, it doesn't matter to them what my car started life as, a GT, G40, 1.0 CL etc...etc... it's the BHP limit that sets the cost. You still have to tell them about everything else so they have all modifications on their list but only bhp makes a difference to price. I'd highly recommend them, I've been with them for a few years now with a few different cars and they've always been great to deal with. I've never had to go through the pain of actually making a claim mind but for everything else they are great.

what ages do you have to be to get insurance with Brentacre ??

Thats really helpfull thanks Heyesey, and everyone else. Its answered my question. I will give brentacre a call tomorrow and see what they say. Hopefully they can help me. Ill also have to try and track down the guy that sold me the engine to see if he can get me the engine code from his log book as I dont want to rip the engine apart again to get the code. I knew I should have written it down before I reassembled it! DOH.
