thought the law only covered sharp edges?

the bumpers are there for a reason, its always been against the law to run without bumpers, there the first thing to cumple in an impact which should cause minimal damage to your car.....

my advice.... just put them back on?

P.s imo cars look crap without bumpers

You've got 14 days to take your car to an MOT garage (with the bumpers on), get the pink VDRS form stamped, and then take the form and your MOT/insurance/licence to the police station and that's the end of the matter.

If you don't get it done then you could be prosecuted for having a vehicle in a dangerous condition and then you'll have to pay a fine and put the bumpers back on anyway.

The pink VDRS form you've got was introduced as a way of making sure people fix minor faults on the cars without the need to fine or prosecute them so best bet is to make sure your car is checked out properly at a garage and then hand the form into the cops, job done.

Bumpers on most cars do bugger all to protect anything, take the mondeo for example, its very thin plastic with expanding foam inside, when one reversed into my hitch at slow speed it looked like carnage, polo ones are just moulded plastic stronger than the Mondeo ones but not much more useful.

If you want bumpers that actually do their job then get an old Toyota Camry, practically a steel girder with some rubber shrink wrapped over it, worse damage that ever had was the reflector in the hitch got smashed when someone rear ended us, something about the car made people not want to break behind you at traffic lights.

but with a 6n you also get a metal bar as with all bumpers, the plastic moulding is just a cover that makes it look pretty, so yes the ACTUAL bumpers do do something.

Ok some bumpers work:

But then again some dont:

And apparently they work here too: Ronaldo's Car

If i pull my back bumper off i have a big ass westfalia hitch bar going across it, now it much rather impact a chrome bumper than that.

the kid has a mk2 polo, they dont look that different with the bumpers off and theres no sharp protruding edges

taking the mk4 bumper off is a completely different kettle of fish because of the way the bumper was designed and when you do take it off the car looks like an aids victim

id take it to the garage mate and see what they say, my golf passed its mot with no rear bumper, but i ended up putting on back on as i was para that if someone did hit into the back off me, altho the bumper wouldnt do much it would limit some of the damage to the actual shell

that's kind of the idea, they are supposed to absorb impact not just be rock solid and transfer all the force of the impact into whatever you've just hit or into the rest of your car. But really they don't do much of anything in a full on impact like in those pics above, they are just for small scrapes and pedestrians.

Something about the second pic i posted disturbed me and I've just realised that the lamp post has actually sawn through the police bmw...take a look at were the fat fireman is standing and you can see the bottom of the pole, looks like the BMW was in the air at the time and hit the post half way up.

cabin is intact, meaning crumple zone did what it needed to do - make sure occupants protected no matter what the cost is to the car

Usually they're pink but different forces might have different forms. The main thing is that it should say VDRS or VDRN on it and have a place for the garage to stamp it.

yeah thats right.

i got pulled before for no exhaust had 14 days to get fixed but i had to send my form off didn't have to produce any other documents

The thing you have to remember is the metal behind the 6n bumper (due to it being a 6n) will be made of rust by now. So won't offer much protection.

What I want to know is why its dangerous not to have a rear bumper on a mk2.

Its not like you will reverse into anything/anyone at high speed. Also what about the vans and trucks that go about with no bumpers, just metal bars on the back, surely thats worse?

ok well hows does that work on my MG B GT that has no bumper!! and it IS NOT ileagle!!!

as for a polo its a mk1/2 then if the holes are removed. and "sharp edges" are smothed off then i cannot see a problem!

i had no rear bumper on my mk4 fes for weeks and never got pulled - i asumed that alsong as there is no sharp edges then its legal

what about after market bumper? they are shit poor at 'extra protection'

i think in this case the copper that pulled TFG was being a c*ck!! cos most you can get a way say it was destroy in a car park!! or your on the way to a scrappy to get a replacement!!! lol..

dnt think i know many nice cops tho .. blitz i think is one of the fue!!! lol

i'm an mot tester and as long as there are no sharp edges exposed due to damage or corrosion then it'll pass.........what it wont pass on however (and you have all missed this point!) is the lack of number plate lights as these are carried on the rear bumper of a mk2 breadvan

ford bumpers are rubbish, my ex gfriends ka back bumper flew off when i got it up to 70!!

her car was all rust though, was only 7 years old.

my dads escort front bumper was distorted when i hit a rabbit.

After seeing your post, i spotted the BMWs one! jezus it must have made some air then!!
