It allways starts quick but has recently the idle goes lower then cuts out. will start again but hav to keep a little on the throttle. never used to do this. Later when it has warmed up even a little bit it idles fine.

What could this be? now i have only done the ignition timing on the idle but has been fine for ages so not sure what it is. drives fine so am puzzled?

Anyone have the same problems with there mk3s or GTs?

It could be that the Idle Stabalisation Valve is faulty.

The ISV opens when the engine is cold so that more (AFM metered) air enters the engine in order to raise the idle and overcome the increased frictional losses of a cold engine. If the ISV fails then you won't get the extra air and the engine will do as you describe.

I could also be one of another 10 things affecting the mixture, an engine sensor (blue temp sensor etc.) or even timing.

Eliminate each one at a time.

First step would be to remove the throttle body elbow and have a look inside - see if the butterflies are clogged and need cleaning.

If they do, grab some carb cleaner and go to town! You can also send some carb cleaner down the ISV hose to try to clean it out.

Have you over-filled the engine oil recently?

may have over filled the oil a little but what would that do to the running on idle when cold?

Overfilling the oil may send oil up the breather into the inlet and throttle body - gumming it up.

Follow the first step above and see what you find :-)

check your afm matey, mine runs like that as mine has gone and needs to be unplugged.

check the big rubber pipe under the inlet manifold.

Right i took off my throttle body black plastic top bit to find quite a bit of oil in my TB and the pipe that goes to the air box. also when opened the TB fully found some oil in the inlet , so thats prob why it smokes a bit when thrashed hard sometimes.

What would be the best option to clean out the oil. in 1. the rubber hose. washing up liquid or Gunk. and what about the inlet will carb cleaner get rid of the oil in the inlet saving me to remove it completley.
