Just nocked this up as i gotta CNC a trigger wheel, will post up the mount for the VR sensor an dizzy blank later. (Will be putting it alll in a how-to soon enough)

I've only done a very small amount of machining before but that looks like some serious work to CNC that!

First time I've seen this thread, it's a shame you're breaking it but I may have to have a couple of bits off you if you do

I'm only gonna CNC the trigger wheel then TIG it onto the bottom pulley so should be a piece of piss.

An if anyones wondering why it's got 36 teeth and not 35 an one missing, thats only a draft :p

That is a piece of piss to machine. You may have to have rads on the webs on the inside, but other than that the inner and outer profile will take no time at all to machine, especially on an 8 Axis or similar lathe.

Good luck with the project, seems to be a fair use of brains going into it!

lol so you think its easy to use a 8 axis CNC then? You can't form webs on a lathe.

And what tooling are you even going to use that can under cut a web like that anyway? The teeth are no problem with a dividing head , but the inside radius will be difficult to program.

Would be to me anyway.

It's easily do'able, depending on what machinery you have to hand. I work with them everyday, you can form webs, depends what machinery you have, they will have rad's on the inside though like I said in my previous post. Using driven tooling and something like a woodruff cutter you could get the basic shape, then possibly finish off with an angled tool holder with an endmill, depending on machine and component size.

The teeth are do-able too, depending again on what machinery and tooling you have available.

The radiused profile inside the component would be easy to turn, even on a 2-axis lathe.

Be easier to cast the component, then finish machine the slots for the cambelt, the teeth and holes.

I'm not going to get into an argument about it, but its going to take a lot of work to form the component on a CNC, It's my job to produce components of similar to design to this, and i would find this difficult.

Holding it stable whilst machining it would be difficult as well. You may have to machine jig or mandrel to hold it.

Going on my past experience jon, I would form it on a conventional centre lathe, then do the details like teeth and mounting holes on the CNC.

I would beef up the walls to get rid of the webs, and change the radius to a chamfer.

You could maybe contact an engineering firm to see if they could do it?

I'm literally only making the trigger wheel that is on the outside of the pulley that looks like this :

Then tig it onto the pulley, not gonna CNC the whole lot, more time and $$$!

Ah right so is the pulley you've 3d modelled an actual model of your AEE one?

Yeah that trigger wheels easy, we made one very similar to that for a colleges lotus twin cam running the same set-up.

How you planning on machining it? I can tell you how we did it if you like?

Haha yeah they're great, a must have when working on a head IMO.

Yer i have some V shapped ones i use when buildin the V8 heads, must make my self some for the polo heads.

Oh and are you planning on going to the rolling road day?

I thought about doing this when buildin my GT as the deck wasn't the best. But the pistons stick outa the bores a little and i thought i'd run in to piston to head clearance problems(well lack of) Then havin to run a thinker head gasket would make deckin the block pretty pointless
