I've just acquired a 1998 1.4 8v 3 door with less than 75,000 on the clock but it has a rust problem in the same place on both sides. Where the bottom corner of each door meets the sill is rusted (door and sill)

It's nothing major and nothing a bit of wet 'n' dry won't sort but I was just wondering if this was a common problem and possibly a design flaw? It looks like the rubbers running around the door frame stop a little short and this is possibly causing rain water to run down the door and collect along the sill? I'm planning on sorting the rust out but was wondering of anyone had encountered this before and knows of any remedies?

seems to be very common for 6n polos to have rusty sills these days. I don't know about a design flaw, just not great rust proofing and 10-15 years worth of abuse. Mk3 golfs can be the same, if they are looked after then they can still look like new, if they haven't been looked after then they can look like someone has just fished them out of the bottom of the sea.

its very hard these days to find a 6n without rust

Aye there diabolical for rust. Always seems to be the bottoms of the doors, sills and around the arches. Our lasses one is like that.
