So yeah, I just crashed my polo in some lanes.. just went round a corner too fast and as jeremy clarkson might put it - 'understeered into a tree'.

Basically, I have already moved the car back to my house as I rang my mate and he towed me home (It happened at 1.30 this morning and I just got in now). I haven't yet told the insurance company that I've crashed though.. is this bad?

I don't want to claim off the insurance as I want to keep my NCB and just cut my losses with the car, but what do I have to do now? Do I still have to tell the insurance company that I have crashed it and that I'm taking it off the road? I'm thinking about just selling it for spares but do I have to inform someone of this.. what happens to the logbook and what the DVLA know about the car?

Ideally I would rather the insurance didn't know I crashed it and I would just like to convert my policy with them to a new polo I will hopefully get soon, could this be done? Is it just the DVLA I have to inform or something, or does it need to go through an insurance company to officially be 'written-off'? Not really sure where to go from here..

I dont see any issue with you not telling the insurance company, just declare it SORN and tell the insurance you want a new car. Then if you do break it up, make sure you fill out the relavant part of the v5.

Ofcorse the only issue i can see is that, if you have crashed into a tree on someone's land, you could have damaged their property. But if there were no witnesses..........

if you tell the insurance you will llose your no-claims, mine wouldnt give mine back as they said someone had upto 3 years to claim! if i where you i would do as others have said and sorn the car, get your money back on the remaining tax and buy another, then just change your policy over. where there witnesses?

I guess since no one else was involved and assuming you didn't damage anyone else's property then you could just take what you want off the car and then scrap it. Then just fill out the section of the V5C for scrapping a car. I guess if you were being a goody-two-shoes then you should tell insurance etc... but I bloody well wouldn't if no one else was involved, there's nothing to gain from it you'll just end up paying more for insurance.

As above theres no need to tell the insurance. just scrap it and fill in the relevant section on the V5 and just notify your insurance of change of car when you replace it. i mean even if they did ask you questions just say the head gasket went and it wasnt worth fixing so you bought another.

I wouldn't even consider telling the insurance company.

They'll increase your premium for 3 years........... even if you don't claim.

my brother totaled his car and just didnt tell the insurance, keeping his 2 years NCB, i woodnt mention it

Yeh them the ones. I was gutted straight after I crashed it, but after checking it out the damage isn't too bad.. so I've decided not to tell the insurance

I would've been waay gutted if anyone else was involved though, totally f*cked lol

At least now I can just accept that I was driving like a d*ck, and learn from it without the consequences affecting anyone else.

Yea tru, lanes are awesome to drive down but there not really for cars are they too narrow and too many road side obsticles

i am currently stripping a 6N and still have the front strengthening bar, complete front panel with rad and fan and all the lights. might be worth taking your front end apart and seeing if its repairable.

polo 6n's are rather straight forward behind all the plastic. if its any use to you let me know.

and i would keep it quiet, dont bother the insurance company.

I crashed my 1st didnt bother telling them, i rung up insureance saying I'm just changing my car, i then let the scrap yard have the car (at that time i wasnt on CP) :)
