Need the throttle potentiometer off of a GT, it's located on the right hand side (from the front of the engine) of the throttle body.

I had a nightmare looking for one when mine died. Ended up buying a whole GT throttle body off ebay for £15 which had the pot still on it.

I did manage to take my old one apart and get it working again, but i keep it as a spare I'm afraid. Just thought id let you know it is possible!

If you get really desperate, VW sell them for £72. Rip off price though for a small bit of plastic with a small circuit board and couple of other bits in it.

Terry - Yeah I took mine apart and cleaned it up a bit but it looks like the resistor track has worn away in one spot so it's unrepairable. Do you know if there are any more components on the other side of the white circuit board? I've not taken it out to look. Don't really want to pay VW price for one.

Not as far as i know, just the circuit board and the feathered arm thingy in there. The problem mine had was that it was a bit dirty (bit of degreaser and then WD40 inside solved) and the feathers had bent due to the dirt. I bent them back and it worked, but the metal is very thin so is probably liable to bend again.

If the board is actually damaged then theres no way of repair i guess.

As far as i know, nowhere else do them new. I spent a while in GSF looking at all of they're potentiometers - they do one small white one with 2 pins, looked like an NZ model one? And one massive one that i presume is off a later model, maybe 6N or newer, i think I've seen 16v TBs with them on. But no GT ones.

I think i was very lucky finding that throttle body on ebay :p

Throttle body including pot. Though pot has been painted and siliconed on by the looks of it. May still work if you can get it cheap enough it might be worth it.

I'll have a look for you on an Audi throttle body i've got spare.

Terry - Yeah i've cleaned mine up a bit, see if it works for now. There is an NZ in the scrappy near me last time I went I didn't take the throttle pot off of it though as it looked different. I'll keep my eye on that throttle body on ebay.

NZ ones are different. They bolt on in a different place and only have two pins instead of three, so you'd never be able to attach it to the multiplug. You can buy new NZ ones from GSF for about £20 (guesstimation on price, but wasnt much more iirc).

They are not interchangeable though as far as i know which is the main point. And i should think any off of an audi will be completely different also.

As far as i know, they are individual to the GT, and they're the only ones that will work. Its quite an important part as it tells the ECU how much your revving. Any difference in part will cause it to read differently and give you major headaches.

What was actually happening to make you think it was faulty anyway? When mine died it felt like someone else was stamping up and down on the accelerator. Had to drive about 3 miles with no correlation between the throttle and the revs unless i floored it. Very scary. Thankfully Giorgio was in the car and knew exactly what part had died lol.

The guy I bought the car off had unplugged the throttle pot and I didn't realise until now. There seems to be a delay after pressing the throttle and revs increasing and it doesn't hold constant rpm when you've got your foot on say half throttle. I've had a timing light on it and the timing is spot on so I don't think that's a problem. It seems to run better without it connected but would that be because the ECU is in 'limp home' mode?

Yeah that sounds right to me. I think mine just went really bad that night. But a delay to revs and erratic revving sounds right. And yeah there is a limp home mode with it unplugged but you'll be using more fuel and have a lot less power etc using it constantly, so I'm led to believe.
