So, after much hunting, this seems to be the best bet for a nice pair of speakers, after I realised they'd be tricky as hell to fit anywhere else.

I also plan to mount a 2 channel amp underneath it.

After a quick bit of googling, it looked like bolting the amp to the shelf upside down caused heat dissipation problems.

So I used my skills, and voila!:

I can't see any major problems, the shelf should be nice and heavy to stop unwanted vibrations, I'll cover the top with carpet to deter pikeys.

Anyone see any issues I might have?

-Oh and I'll cover the speaker tops with some grilles.

Another question, This'll be combined with two little 50W speakers up front running from the Head Unit, I don't reckon I'll need a subwoofer.

Should I go for 7" speakers or 6x9's?

It's an un-even(ish) surface on the Mk3, plus it'd stick out into the boot, and knowing my luck I'd clobber it with a bag or something. :p

ahh i see, i was thinking of places were i could put my two amps then just thought i would stick them on the back of the rear seats in the mk4

Go for 6x9s in the back mate. Or else your not going to get much bass.

Otherwise, it looks like a sound idea (haha, like the pun )

don't know how strong you parcel shelf is but thats a fair amount of weight! and also i'm not sure there would really be enough room for the heat to disperse properly because you should leave them fairly uncovered really so this would possibly limit the life of your amp.

sorry to be negative but there are a couple of issues to this design

1 heat dissipation could still be an issue

2 what if you need to remove the shelf???

why amp the rears put the amp on the fronts and run a pair of 6x9's(if you have to) off the h/u

I can't see why dissipation would be any worse than under the seat though, would I be better having a grille/plenty of holes drilled under the amp for better circulation?

And the shelf would easily lift out, just unclip the cables from the amp and presto.

Looks like 6x9's will be a seriously tricky fit on the standard parcel shelf.

How would 2 way 6.5's sound at the back with a couple of ten quid tweeters powered by the 50W head unit?

For example: 6.5's Tweeters

Its never a good idea to have the amp on the same surface or mounting point as the speakers. the speakers rattle the amps inner workings and thus limit its lifetime. also mention earlier, heat dicipation will be an issue to consider. also i dont think the parcel shelf would hold that much wieght either. sorry to be all negative! try making another shelf from wood underneath the parcel shelf (not attached to the parcel shelf itself) and mount the amp upside down (boot facing) wont rattle the shit out of the amp and heat dicipation no longer an issue!

yeah the amp will be affected by speakers, you're gonna need a very strong parcelshelf, and you have the heat problem again. You may need to refine it but I must say nice design work

Yup, the speakers vibrate, you'll get the best reponse by mounting the speakers on a sturdier surface than a standard parcel shelf, it'll dampen the sound loads. I'd make a new parcel shelf out of 12mm or maybe 18mm MDF and whack the amp on the roof to keep the heat to a minimum...

Nah, seriously though, i'd do an MDF shelf and mount the amp on the back of the seats, quite high up then you'll be less likely to clip it with anything. HTH
