Been lurking around the forum for awhile now and just bought a GTI 6n2 :-D

Anyway, what are the rules regarding letter spacing on number plates?

I'm about to buy a private plate but would want it spacing like

xxxx xx

Would this be possible?

Pretty sure that with 6 letter number plates it has to be 3 either side so therefore you'd need it illegally spaced for that.

Anything to distort it's original reading I would suggest is illegal.

Plus be guided by the producer of the plates, they will probably get you to sign a disclaimer

That's still illegal - the space between the 1 and the A must be at least twice that of the space between the 1 and the S.

I know this because i run a five digit plate myself,and it incorrectly spells one complete word (it's a bit more obvious than S1 AMO, more like S1 AMD so it'd be unnecessary to have it as S1AMD anyway).

I dont mind though,i think its a bit desperate to change the spacing in order to make it more obvious. You can either see it or you cant,no skin off my nose,but i suppose it being only five digits makes it blatantly obvious anyway.

My 2p - i prefer them,they're tougher. Legal GB ones are available,so i dont see why not.

I want the metal ones with plastic letters though - not as tough,but proper retro for the old skool motor.

Basically, the easy way to remember what is legal is this- go to a garage, and look at a new car for sale. The plates on that are legal. It will probably have a plastic reflective plate that looks like every other plate in the UK.

Yes, it is nice to be a little different, but you dont go putting square wheels on your car, so dont go putting 'different' plates on either.
