Good day good people with the wisdom of the mighty Polo in their blood,

I am wanting to remove the bumbers from my 1986 MK2 Polo Coupe S. The issue I have is that the front bumber incorporates the indicators. Behind the bumber are two nice round holes where the wires for the indicators come through and my plan is to fit round indicators units, using these holes as the mounting point. I have seen the bumperless look done on other MK2 polos and MK1 Golfs and I like it. IMy question is, do any of you wise warriors of the Polo know if there is a particular round indicator unit that fits without too much pratting about. I have no probs dirlling a few holes either side of the above mentioned holes to allow for screwing the inidicator units in but I don't want any heavy duty modifying.

I had the bumper off mine whilst repairing it.

From the front, it does look cool, but from the side it looks gash as the grill sticks our further than the valence. Also, if you have an accident, you'll f*ck your car up. My bumper did its job in a recent impact as it's bolted into 2 mega chunky bits of the chassis. Protected the valence and front of the car.

Your bigger problem though will be finding a solution to lighting the rear numberplate as the lights are also in the rear bumper.

If your bumpers are faded, just refurb them or buy some new bumpers (around £75 each). You can still get them from pattern suppliers.

Up to you at the end of the day, but I perfer the bumpers on. I'll be interested to see how you get on though if you do it. Good luck.

Well what can I say about the strength and beauty of Polo owners. I was hoping for something but this veritble deluge of fine knowledge is all a freak like me could ever hope for. :-)

My 1986 Coupe S is standard and shiny blue currently, and has been for the 3.5 years I've owned it. Soon it will change and the plan is to make it look like an army car. To this end I intend to hand paint it matt army green, with matt black used on the plastic arch trim and any blue showing on the interior and engine bay. I don't like shiny cars and I like things to look used and a bit battered. My car is too nice and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to blue.

GiW: I know the lights overhand the underside, but the plastic trim along the front at the bottom then sticks out again, plus I think it will add to the army style feel to still have the obvious panel indentations where the bumper was. As for accidents, I haven't had one in 3 years and, again, a prang will only add to the army look! As for lighting the rear number plate, I plan on taking it to 'the right MoT test station' shall we say. Cheers for the input though.

prankstar2003: Mini ones were my original idea and probably still are. I just need to confirm how they fit, and I have a chum with a mini mind who is going to let me know.

Lastly, T F G: What a small world it is. I know where you live and I used to drive past your car on the way to work every day until I moved to Woodchurch recently. I liked the square lighted grill you had on until you had that little bump, it looked cool. Still, you can have a nice warm feeling knowing that driving past your car has inspired me to get my finger out of my arse and get on converting mine. Don't get too big headed though, the plan was already in my head but you can consider yourself the catalyst. Stay strong and I'll keep an eye out for any future changes. Cool wheels as way by the way.

Number plate light is a "legal" requirement, as the po po dont like number plates they cant read. They also dont like it when the lights are too bright.

Yep, I'm going to do a massive dump on each of the seats, which I will rip to shreds first. Then I'm going fit a roll cage and chequer plate the interior. Next I will take a hammer to all the panels and smash the windows to allow for maximum interior damp before fitting massive sound and a whale tail...Or...maybe I'm going to paint it with really hard wearing paint and just remove the bumpers, which could easily be put back on? Your car looks really clean and smart but is the same blue as mine, which in my opinion looks rubbish. I am just not a blue man. I'm sure many people would prefer your car to what mine will end up like, but everyone is different and I couldn't give a monkey's left testicle about appealing to Johhny Average and his dullard mate Mr. Standard. Thanks for your opinion though and keep on keeping it clean if that is what appeals to you.

This is just the point. The colour is irrelevant,the fact is its a rare original and it seems a bit strange to buy the painting of Mona Lisa and then splatter it with Dulux because you'd prefer it if she was wearing a green vest.

Why not choose a different painting? That one really is exceptional,even still has the original stripe and rare wheels. You just dont find them like that anymore,its actually quite irresponsible and insensitive to post what you have to this audience.

Some will say I've ruined mine with the engine mods,but every part of the car,including the car itself,was either scrap or on the verge of being scrapped. There was little to save but the shell.

I'm not into anorak trailer queens either,its just a daily not a show car,but it desperately needed paint and wasn't anywhere near as clean as yours when i started.

Its your car,crack on,but you just ought to realise what you're about to do to a rare car,when I'm sure you could easily swap with someone instead.

It is great to hear so much love for the MK2 Polo. Mine is a pretty original example I suppose, although it is nowhere near perfect. I would never consider swapping it as I've had it for 3.5 years and had much done on it to keep it mechanically sound. I've also had loads of great experiences in it and loads of great memories - it is by far the best car I've ever owned, although that is comparing it to a 1987 Renault GTS, a 1994 Peugeot 106 XSi and two banged out old Porsche 944s. Anyway, not the point.

Mechanically it is standard but the engine bay is starting to show its age and is not a pretty site. If ever I can afford to restore the mechanics of it and get another car in the meantime I would be faithful here as it is already as much fun as I need and was designed and built so well. The interior is also still pretty nice and standard, except for the 8-ball gearknob I've added (I still have the original) and the 80s car phone that was already fitted when I bought it. I plan on keeping the interior pretty standard.

All I am going to do is remove the bumbers and paint it. The new indicators should just fit into the holes where the wires come through for the current bumber indicators. I know by doing what I am going to do I am not keeping the car looking factory perfect, but believe me there are 1,000,001 little imprefections already that perhaps only I know about after getting to know The Brown Buffalo, as I call it, so well. If in the future someone wanted to restore a car to show standard and have it looking like it has never been used then this car would still represent an excellent start as it would just need respraying. This would need doing anyway as it does have loads of little stone chips, minor dents, touched up rust spots and laquer peel.

My car is a daily driver and I personally don't see the joy of owning a car to keep it locked away only to take it out to shows and special occassions and to try and keep it perfect. It is a machine. A machine that was mass-produced and made of metal and plastic and powered by explosions and fuel. It is not a ming vase or the Mona Lisa. It does not suit feelings of romance and love, although I must confess that I do love it even though I know that is irrational. It was designed to be used and I personally feel preening it and polishing it is not doing it justice, especially when it is so much fun to drive and use. Don't get me wrong though, I look after its needs very well, I just don't molly coddle it. Whenever something needs doing it gets done without hesitation.

Anyway, this is going on a bit isn't it? Thanks for all the concern. Please try not to worry about The Brown Buffalo. It is in safe hands and will be kept strong. When it does go to the Great Scrap Yard in the Sky, which I hope is not for many years, it will have many good stories to recount to The God of Cars and it will get into Automotive Heaven.

Fair play. Cant say you've not looked after it and they were being scrapped on an hourly basis when you bought it - so the only reason it stands as it does is thanks to you.
