Hi guys, i bought my mk1 golf ready polo 1.3 gt converted and its giving me problems. It drives fine from time to time but suddenly starts to hesitate. I could have my foot down on the accelerator while driving and suddenly it'l stop revving and sort of start idling again, ide have to really slam my foot down for the car to start moving again at speed. Important thing to remember is the engine doesnt cut off. What could be the problem? I have plans of taking the engine out and rebuilding it but ide like to sort the problem out first. I've recently changed the ht leads, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs.. but to no avail.

could be an ECU problem and its cutting fuel or a problem at the fuel rail with the injectors.

Exactly! What can i do to check these area?

1st 2 things i would check are the throttle potentiometer (the pot could have a dea spot, causing the revs to just drop) and the air flow meter connection (the plug contacts can corrode, causing intermittent failures)

Is that the unit below the distributor? Any more clues on how to check this unit?

TPS is in the side of the throttle body, mine had a short in it causing it to overfuel that caused hesitation. On the SPI its a big black plug on the right side, on the GT it on the same side but i think its just 2 switches.

One on the distributor is the hall sender, pull the dizzy cap off and check that there isnt any little plastic shavings in there, as that points to it failing.

cost about 70 quid from vw but you might pick up a whole throttle body for less
