My engine is burning alot of oil, loads of blue smoke is pooring out of the exhuast on idle once the engine warms up but iv just rebuilt the head with new seals so its abit odd could be a piston ring so I'm going to do a compression test.

Iv been told i can change the seals with the head still on iv worked out how to get the value springs out but how would i compress the value springs back in Again.

practically impossible, you need the head off to be able to use the spring compressors safely + even if you did managed to get the collets and springs off the valve would most likely drop into the cylinder before you get a chance to secure it.

its much easier to get the head off, at least then you can get the HG done at the same time.

it can be done on the ford cvh .look into how thats done ,save me typing .but by the time you have made the tool the head would be on your bench ,where you can change head gasket and re seat valves .

No i didnt becouse when i took the head of the gasket haded gone or anything so i thought it would be oright.

You can do them in situ, but it requires a compressor and spark plug adapter. You drop the piston to the bottom and pressurise the cylinder to stop the valve moving. You then need some way of pushing the spring cap down to remove the collets. You can also try pushing the valve into the piston whilst it's at the top but you have to hold the crank still.

you can put string in the spark plug hole (dont let go of the end)

then turn the crank so it jams the string betwean the piston and the valve

use 6mm rope

You then need some way of pushing the spring cap down to remove the collets.

I don't understand why you're gonna go to all this effort

Why not take the head off and replace the valve stem seals, re seat or lap valves, give a good de-coke and do a diagnostic on the state of your cylinders?

Oh and the Ford CVH uses a reverse cam action as compared to the VW heads as the camshaft is underneath the tappets. Rocker arms are used to move the valves which are much more exposed than the VW valves, making it much easier to remove the collets and springs etc

Iv rebuilt the head oready with new seals and re seated the valves, the second time i started the engine since i rebuilt the head it started to burn alot of oil and the engine hasnt done no miles at all since the head rebuild. it could be a piston ring but when the head was of everything looked fine and the last owner of the engine said it wasnt burning oil at all and the engine was healthy I'm going to do a compression test anyway. Maybe i haven't put a valve stem seal on properly i dont no.

i just wanted to know if there was another way of changing the valve stem seals without taking the head of becouse i realy dont want to take head of again after i have only just putting it back on.

I've done it on the g40 in the car no probs but made a special tool to help out
