Just sorting my GT saloon out and the gear change has always been incorrect 1st is where 3rd is and it's a bugger to get into 5th

took some photo's and this is what it looks like

I know that the shaft could be turned for correct changes but the hose clip???? WTF

Definately not right, the right parts are there but i guess the amount of play in the linkage (normally the rubber ball wearing out) is being taken up by the clip.

I'd be tempted to source another linkage before taking it apart, just in case!

i doubt that hose clip is doing any harm, your problem is prob just bad adjustment.

That chose clip is there because you linkage will be worn here:

Mine has loads of play in it there aswell, its because the little bit sticking out at the bottom of this part wears out and wont fit nice into the part with the rubber ball on

VW want £18 for that part. I have a plan to repair one, just need to get another one to play with.

just didn't wanna start taking it off and adjusting it. Only just got it running was a surprise to people behine me when pulling off i be puting it into reverse while trying to find first.

Just checked the garage and i've got two of those linkages in the garage going spare, one is complete and the other is just the part circled.

I've not known the pin to wear out yet, but have replaced the rubber ball twice over the years. I guess these things were not designed to last 15+ years.

once you've replaced the large ball type bush that screws onto the gear actuator arm (on the box) you must replace the rubber bush that goes inside it, otherwise the new bit will be just as useless as the last.

To adjust the gear linkage properly you'll need a second pair of hands. Put the car in neutral and slacken off the clamp, get someone to sit in the car and push the gearstick left gently so its almost upright (still leaning right slightly). make sure when this is done they don't push down or up or down. Tighten the clamp in the engine bay. Check the availability of all gears.

Sounds like if you've got all the gears then its just a matter of setting the gear stick in the best neutral position.

Ahhh that's what's wrong with my 6n I have to put the gearstick in reverse to get 1st and push it right over to get reverse! Can be very dodgy at traffic lights because I didn't know wether it was 1st or reverse! The long bib from the car behind usually indicated reverse lol

i know this a really old post but i have a similar problem with my gt gearbox. i was driving one day and the gearstick went haywall and was moving around everywhere! a quick look in the engine bay and the bush is shredded and had fallen out down the road! (look at pics). i dotn know where to where to get that bush/seal from!!! any help? thanksss so much if anybody helps!!!!!
