Got a polo 6n2 8v 2000 reg current alt is 70A need something bigger 120+ for a sound system any ideas? can i take one out of a diff model vw?

no it will not all a capacitor does is store energy like a battery and is suppposed to help smooth the power supply and tighten the bass up

his problem is the alernator has a maximum amp output of 70 amps and his amps alone have a maximum current draw of 160 amps

therefore his soundsystem is pulling more current than the alternator can supply therefore the current supply is not high enough and his amps keep cutting out

Fit two 90ah alternators. Shouldn't be too hard to make a bracket.

Might have to dump the power steering for space and belt length - so it'll even drive better.

2 90 amp alternators won't help as all it will do is still only give 90 amps total

also did you not see the bit where i said he has 160 amps of current draw for the amps alone let alone the current the car pulls when the cars own electrical system is running

Well two 36a batteries will start my 1.6 - but one alone wont. The voltage may stay the same but the output is certainly doubled.

Incidentally,2x90 is more than 160. And you dont need the stereo on full blast,with main beams on,whilst starting the engine.

Fitting two or more alternators is nothing new,its not a theory,I've seen five in an engine bay of a van carrying too many subs and it worked - so what,they just top up the batteries quicker? Twice the output is being generated in the case of two alternators,so twice the output is going somewhere.

Others harness it successfully enough,so a search of car audio nerds in mags and online should enlighten.

I'm not too hot on audio forums,having a 21yo head unit with single speaker,but have a look here where people might have some experience..

i'm on talk audio and have been for 10 years

fitting 2 alternators is not an option for him as there is no space for it plus he would also need custom pulleys and a belt etc etc

the easiest option is to get an uprated alternator

he does not need it for starting the car

i was a successful db drag spl competitor for 10 years and know a fair bit regarding charging systems and fitting alternators

so therefore fitting 2 alternators does not give 180 amps it will still be 90 amps

yes 2 alternators can be done one for each battery but thats still not really going to help

I've already said that.

I dont care if you were world champion,what i said was that one 36ah battery will give 12v but be too weak to turn a 1.6 yet two 36ah batteries will still give only 12v but spin it over hard.

Incidentally,the two spin it over harder than the than the massive battery in my Mondeo 2.0 but if you say they're not double the amps then hey,who am i to argue..

VR6 alt is 120amp iirc and should be a direct fit, was gonna do the same to my polo but never got round to it

Landrover Discovery 3 alternator. That should do it. :)

direct fit though ? didnt think so...

Neither was my 6n 70ah one,but the minor modifications required to fit non-standard parts should be expected.
