Featured Replies

hi everyone , i was wondering if anyone of you know if tinting front windows , meaning passenger and driver's was illegal , i've been told by community support friend that it was illegal , if it was then why i see 100's of cars daily with all windows tinted (except windscreen obviously) there must be a trick somewhere , or are we allowed to only tint them slightly ?

cheers peeps

Front passenger and driver side windows are now illegal to tint.

The only reason you see 100's daily is because they will be on more expensive cars I.e Mercedes ML, Audi Q7, Vauxhall VXR etc etc...you get this jist.

Now, who do you think the police are tempted to pull more for tints? A bloke in his late 20's - mid 30's in his mercedes or a lad in his teens or early 20's in a polo or similar hot-hatch with the same mod?

i get you are point matey , just have a look at this official website and look at the confusion , http://www.ukmotorists.com/tinted%20windows.htm , it basically says that teinting front window at under 30% is fine over 30% u get pulled , appreciate you are answer but then I'm completely confused with this bollocks rule

Manufacturers used to sell cars with tinted front door glass,id like to hear the stance on that. Generally,if a car had (or didnt have) something as standard, new laws cant force you to change it.

As is the case for cars registered before '62 being exempt from front seat belts, rear belts in '85,and the same stance on things like fog lights,driver/passenger door mirrors etc.

I doubt the law can force you to remove the tinted front glass from your '89 Fiesta 1.1 Ghia, same with its impregnated sunstrip,so for light green coloured tint i doubt those of us with pre-millenia cars would have such problems.

The views of a copper or/and solicitor would be interesting,here..

Bottom line is you're not allowed to tint your front windscreen or driver/passenger windows in any way whatsoever.

If your windows were tinted at the factory they will conform to British Safety Standards and are permissible as long as they allow 70% or more of the light to come through (75% for windscreen).

However it's now illegal to have tinted windows that are anything other than factory standard.

If you get caught then you'll have to remove the tint and then show it to the police to confirm you've done it or instead go to court, pay a fine, and then have to remove them anyway.

Plus if you're ever in an accident and there is any suggestion that your window tinting could have been a contributory factor then it's drop the trousers and lube up time because you will definitely be shafted.

What about numberplates?

I heard they're failing cars now for having older plastic plates without the BS number and all that..

check this website out , guys a mate of mine knows what he`s on about :thumbsup:http://www.solartint.co.uk/faq.htm

I've had window tints for 2 years now, totally black on the back and very dark on the front. Never had an issue.

all the new mercs and the like that i have seen are black on the rear and lighter on the front- i thought that was the law.

I've had mine tinted in the front for about a year on my mk4 and been pulled over for other things but the tints have never been an issue

i had my old clio tinted all round got pulled and tested got offered to go court or take em out, so took them out

lil hint if you are pulled say u bort it like it and no garage would test them because dnt have equipment i did and it got me off the hook with a producer to have them removed and report to them within 14days. or i could have had 3points per window and 60quid minimum per window

rules were you are only aloud 25% but newer cars have 5% sun tint on them from factory which is in the glass so older cars u can tint 25% but u cant buy any lower than that so newer cars you are guna be over the limit meaning illegal.

while i had my polo for 2years I had all the windows tinted... medium on rear & light tint on front windows.. never had a problem & it was a good selling point to the person who bought it. if you want to do it just go for it, is illegal as technically all windows are slightly tinted from manufacture to the limit but its worth the risk.

The answer to this would be a glass manufacturer producing "smart" glass for cars with a variable tint function, under the new laws they would make a killing on the modified scene.

This is literally the stuff, researched it to death during my A-levels...

Smart Glass

Wow that smartglass stuff looks interesting, and it can be used on polycarbonate plastic so you could have lighter and custom adjustable tint windows all round!!!!

Bet it costs a fortune though :-(

See they say all this bollocks that tints on front can be 27% tinted (factory fitted basicly) but why are the police allowed full tints all round on their undercover cars (mainly vauxall mirvira) or watevs their called. Ain't the point in no tints on the front so you can see what the other drivers doing hence giving you better reaction times (apparently) tis all a load of shite

exactly its bullshit here in london all the crime response cars they have have more than 30 % tints the basically limo black!absolute bollocks!
