Hellooo people!

Right then, i brought some 60mm lowering springs for my 6n and i put them on about two weeks ago, but the height still isnt low enough. I have very little money so i carnt reli go buying coilovers just yet. Is cutting the 60mm springs down abit an easy option to a "slammed" car untill I've saved up for coilies or will it just make loads more problems for me??

Pleeeeeease help as i am a poor dubber in need of a low car

Coilovers ain't that much son, like I said on Sunday, can get some off eBay for £150 if you're lucky, then I can help fit them :-D

I've been looking on ebay n that but the cheapest I've found is £169 and i dont have tht to spend willy nilly.

Do you reckon cuttin the springs will do me any harm for like 2 months untill i have the money to spend on coilies??

Up to you matey, but if you're doing it with the standard shocks, I would advise against it as the ride will be like a bloody boat

a couple of coils won't do any harm.

I have 80mm springs cut in half... no problems yet! Done almost a thousand miles on em aswell. Just make sure you fasten them down to the spring seat.

i was only on about takin like 1 maaaaaybe 2 coils out not cut the thing in half. R u on standard shocks though and is the ride shite??

yeh but because they have been cut they will not seat in the strut how they should do.

I find they sit in the seat just fine mate, just cut the spring at an angle. Nah i'm on uprated shocks an pretty much on the bumpstops... ride is mega hard. Just till i can afford a set of coilies though. Pikey ftw haha

wtf how does your exhaust clear anything?

loads of people say there not safe... bla bla but have they actually drove cars with them??

i had a 80mm kid springs and shock and took a coil of them and tbh it handeled better and was alot better than it was before..

had uprated shocks as well in the kit no problems at all...

Powerflow jobby mate, custom mounts. Scrapes the undertray/ sills before it hits the exhaust haha.

why would a chopped spring not seat right? as long as you have cut a full coil off there is no reason why it wouldn't. the cup that the spring sits in has a dip where the end of the spring sits in it so as long as you chop it in the same place the new end of the spring will still sit in it fine. although if you are referring to the fact that the spring may be loose when the shock is extended then what do you think happens with lowering springs?

It's all been explained before. Use the search.

quick way out /\ , lads on here i no chopped there springs and they all say its fine. none of them say it handles like a boat , but they all say its a hard ride. if you are sure your gonna be able to chop the springs then do it so the end of the spring at the bottom is sitting at the same bit as it did before you cut it. and then you could cable tie it to the seat to make sure that if you get some air that the spring doesnt come off the seat.

If this is all to save moeny , then why not buy some new or uprated shocks wich arnt much this will make sure that your shocks can handle the extra stess, then cut the springs properly and fit it all back on. doing this untill you can afford coilys will be alright.

the main negative about cut springs is if you take too much off, or dont fit sports shocks then you are running the shocks right at the end of their stroke resulting in a shit ride and massively reduced lifespan.

its the same age old forum nonsense about removing helpers causing your car to handle like crap and flip over and kill you.

Ok then, so if cut them properly and then fit them in properly they should be fine for a few months.

I think I'm just gonna do and see what happens.

I went to the autosport show way back in january and I spoke to this rather attractive blonde girl on the powerflow stand

And she cut the springs on her new mini and she said her car is fine just gets a bit bouncy over bumps.

Its safe as long as its done right but personally I'd rather be riding high until I can afford the coilies

3 problems:

1. Insurance - have any of you told the insurance you've cut your springs?

2. The sort of steel used in springs isn't the best thing to be taking an angle grinder to, as this will increase the chances of a spring cracking. Basically, think GCSE Chemistry, molecular structures, etc. There is a safer way, but I'm not going to say what it is in case you try it and get it wrong.

3. Spring dislocation - get it wrong, go over a humpback bridge a bit quick and put the suspension into negative gravity, if the spring isn't seated right and comes off the strut at the bottom, when it gets weight back on, bad shit happens.
