Wonder if you could advise me please?

I'm new to polo ownership and not 100% familiar with it yet!

My headlights are very bright as they're 6000k BUT they're pointed so far down they only light up about 10feet infront of the car! They light that 10 foot very well however I have to drive with full beams on at night if there's no street lights and when I have to turn them off when someones coming towards me I can barely see.

I've tried adjusting them using a screwdriver in the little green knob which I presume is for up n down adjustment and I was screwing them (sorry that sounds wrong!) for bloody ages for fook all difference.

Is this a common thing?

Are my headlights screwed?

On the TT they had a self leveling bar on the rear struts... when you turned them on you'd see the lights go up and down to adjust correctly. However the polo doesn't do this.

I'm thinking due to the coilovers maybe mine are bust (that's if the polo has these!).

So come on peeps... i need some advice as where I live there are no street lights just loads of very fun country lanes which I can't see at the moment!!!!

should be a little wheel somwhere on the dash marked 0,-,1,2,3. point the car at a wall and turn this until they reach the desired level

GTi xenons aren't auto adjustable iirc. Have you got vag-com?? I'm sure there's a way of adjusting them with vag-com.. If not, take it to your local dealer - They are able to adjust them for you and shouldn't charge you loads, I've heard of some not charging at all!

Cymro - There is no adjuster on the dash on the GTi, only the adjuster for the dash lights.

There isn't any dash adjuster... I don't think you get these with xenons (none of my previous cars with xenons as std have had them anyway!)

I was hoping to avoid going to VW and looking like a tool asking them to adjust my headlights when it should be fairly simple but i'm probably going to have to!

There used to be until he bloody moved! It's ok, i'll pop into VW on Saturday, or just call em tomorrow.

Right well I've spoken to VW today and they've said the only way of adjusting them is via the little allen key / screw on the top which i've tried but to no joy so looks like a need new headlights :(

Steve can you take a pic of this allen key/screw that you have to adjust to move the headlights please?

Xenons by law have to auto level.

there should be a sensor bolted to the wishbone, these usually get overlooked when fitted coilovers etc, and the plastic arm breaks, causing the car to think there is stuff in the boot, hence pointing the lights down. maybe one on the rear too, but will definatly have them as it is the law! lol

I did think this!!! As mine don't auto adjust.

I got upto about 50 and lost count! They made feck all difference so I doubt I'll need them adjusting!!!!

Anyone got a pic of what to look for??? I'm gonna go and jack it up quickly!

aint got no pics, it should be a little black box with an electrical connector, and a pivoting arm, which should bolt to the bottom arm in some form or another

I've just popped outside and got the trolley jact out. I can't see anything that doesn't look right or missing or anything which looks like an 'auto leveler'.

Could somebody confirm where the auto leveler is located???

Where abouts on the wishbone??? My dad says there won't be one on the front??? Is it worth me jacking up the front to have a look???

if thats all good though, it needs to get hooked up to a diag computer to see if it has any faultcodes

Ok mate. I will see what i can do... I love my midnight drives but these are ruining them!!!!

i know tts and s3s defo have them on the front and rear, cos i used to work for audi

same rules will apply for volkswagen i assume?

ETKA lists a height sensor at the back on a 6n2!

there you go then, knew it would be on 1 axle! Definatly have them on the front and back of xenon equipped tt's/s3's though

thinking about it, you will have to make the arm shorter to trick the car into thinking it isnt lowered.

So what would happen if you fitted the GTI projector headlamps to a non gti, would they be unadjustable, as the car wouldn't have come with the projectors from the factory.

no idea, you might be able to take the adjuster motors out of the headlamps and put in the old manual adjusters in instead? pretty sure the fitting is the same, just twists in, sort of like the bulb holder on a front indicator unit if you get me?

same happend to my gti, the headlights do self adjust when you put the ignition on, if you park close to summit youll see that they move. whats happend is the motors that level the lights are built into the light (obviously) and on the leveller is a motor with a plastic arm with a ball on the end like a very small ball joint and this plugs into a part on the back of the light on the inside. you canot fix this, it is a bastard to do. vw sell the motor for £22 but i wont take the light apart to fix mine as it would never go back together! so i glued mine so its just legal as its over £300 for new lights. but its very common on all vw gas discharge lights. to take the lights out you have to fold the front bumper forwards takes about half hour to do m8. its a reall pain.
