I think people take everything way too seriously. Its almost as if its become a contest between people rather than an appreciation of what we have in common and to gain enjoyment out of it and our enthusiasm for our cars. The VW Scene and other car modifying scenes have attracted people to it that take part in it because they think they will be accepted by their peers or makes them feel better about themselves. Media has had an affect on this with the increased releases on films and magazines depicting the glamorous life of car modification and the money and women. Its this miss representation of car enthusiasm and modification in general that has attracted people to it rather than the fact that they just enjoying spending time with their cars, spending time underneath the bonnet of a car and finding out how things work and how to improve things.

The majority of members on here posting threads such as "How much will it cost me to have coilovers fitted by my local garage?" or "How much will it cost me to have a wheel bearing done?" or another favourite "What wheels should i buy?" and when you tell them why not do it yourself they come up with some balls arse excuse like "I'm not really very competent" (then learn, someone had to in the first place), or "i haven't got the time" and "I just want other peoples opinions on my car" the ammount of members on here who probably dont own a haynes manual for their cars, or dont even know what a haynes manual is. Its these people who have joined the so called 'scene' that have ruined it, because its no longer about enjoyment and sharing a compassion for something, its a contest. Who has the most expensive wheels, or the lowest ride. Its not the scene is ruined or it is boring its just people are too narrow minded and dont see it anymore for what it really is.

You could say the same thing to someone wanting, say, a retrim, or a big engine conversion then, right? "do it yourself, learn, someone had to in the first place"

Just because someone hasnt got the skills needed for mechanical work on their car, doesnt mean they shouldnt be allowed to be part of a car scene or that they have ruined said scene

Aslong as show and shines exist, and winners get prizes, it will always be a contest.

We all want the best cars, and that's what leads to the competition. We see someones car, we want to make ours better than theirs.

No see thats not the point i was trying to make, its peoples inability to want to learn, thats what i was getting at. I mean isnt that what the original point of car enthusiasm was??? It wasnt to have a better car than the member that logs on after you thats for sure. It was to gather knowledge and infortmation about something purely for the love of it. Its to test and extend the boundaries of what has been done and what can/could be done. Fair enough some people do what others have done before and are happy with that, that doesnt make them any less enthusiasts and yes I'm not saying indy123 that there wont be competition and rivalry but since when did the 'scene' become obsessed with it???

Car enthusiasm has kind of lost its core principals of appreciation for craftsmanship and engineering. This isnt said for all people, just the majority of people now who say they are 'car enthusiast' but dont have that appreciation for the engineering and craftsmanship that goes into creating some of the immense pieces of engineering and some would say art that we see on this forum and many others. Most people who say they are car enthusiasts purely cause they post on a VW forum and own a VW and modify their VW do it because they believe it to be cool. A car whether it be VW or any other make has become more like a fashion accessory rather than a passion.

TBH, I couldn't give a flying f--k if my car's "scene" or not, and most people I know who are proud to be part of the "scene" actually know bugger all about the workings of a car.

To be fair, I'm not even that emotionally attached to VW's, I like 80's cars, and VW's are the ones that are left that don't need humungous amounts of welding.

il be finally moving to the jap scene when i can insure a 200sx (about 6 months) but there is something about vws and its "scene" that you dont get with others

its only a matter of time before the jap scene gets wrecked too...

i have no haynes manual for any of my cars, i've never owned or used a haynes manual and i very much doubt i ever will, but i've probably built and had a hand in building more cars than you've had sexual partners lol. i'm a 'real man', the type that opens up flat pack furniture and straight away throws away the instructions because instructions are a direct challenge to any mans masculinity!
