if i make sure the clutch connections and that its the right linkage. do you think a 1.4 gearbox would fit in ok and work correctly? thankyou :-)

Yeah its a straight swap. The ratios are likely be a bit shorter though,giving you more acceleration but less efficiency and a reduced top speed.

cheers mate, av you ever put a 1.4 gearbox in a 1.6 before mate, because theres loads of different transmission codes. dya reakon as long as i get the same clutch connection and 2 cable connection the rest of the gearbox should fit in smoothly. thanks alot for you help mate :-D

The different codes are for different gear/diff ratio combinations,same unit though. As long as it's from a petrol 6n it'll bolt in,and as a general rule of thumb consider the bigger the engine,the longer the ratios.

I've bolted a Seat Corboda box and both MK2 4&5-speed boxes to the 1.6,but you need one from a 6n only for its gear linkage mount (i had rod remote,you've got cable).

I'll do a bit of hijacking here, so any petrol 6n gearbox will fit on my AEE? Model year important in any way? Also, is there a way to check the condition of the gearbox before mounting it or buying it? Don't want to buy a trashed gearbox...

I've done this conversion and it wasnt a straight forward conversion, the box fitted but the linkage was different and in a different place. I had to get a bracket fabricated and use a lot of trial and error to get the gears right. There was a noticable difference in acceleration particularly in 4th and 5th, however, the box was silent when it was put in (70,000 miler) and now after 5000 miles its started making that dry bearing noise my other box was making before it blew up! My advice...dont bother, these boxes are too weak, and even the 1.6 box is too weak for the 1.6! hope this helps p.s my car is a 97 and the donor box was a 95, so possibly same year will fit perfect?
