I've never thought it was expensive eighter tbh.

besides it only goes up 1-3p, hardly breakin the bank.

I'm not bothered about the price of oil, the fact that they can pump it out of the ground, refine it then still make millions in profits whilst keeping a barrel relatively cheap compared to say mineral water as pointed out, however what does bother me is the 65% tax we pay upon it. That's the real fucking issue here

Remember, 65p of that £1.05 or whatever you pay at the pump is tax....

Therefore if it was sold without tax, 40p a litre? It may seem a massive effort to drill and extract oil and gas, but then look how much profit Shell made last year? Something like $20billion.

Also the oil is refined after it get's back in the UK, it's just oil that gets shipped or pumped to the UK.

Trucks usually come straight from a refinery, there is no 'middle' warehouse.

Tax is the real problem facing us here...but what do you expect a financially bankrupt country to do?

A few years ago when Gordon Brown was Chancellor he sold almost half of the UK's Gold reserve when

Gold was trading at an all time LOW...Nice move if you were an African Dictator who is keeping the money

Correct. The below figures are for some of the major global energy companies:

Shell's profit was US$27.277 bn in 2008.

BP's operating profit was US$21.157 bn.

ExxonMobil's was US$45.22 bn.

Chevron's was US$23.391 bn.

Total's was US$ 15.15 bn.

All this talk of how much effort goes into extracting oil is quite frankly rubbish. It ignores the sheer economies of scale inherent within the oil industry. A supertanker, for example, holds around 2 million barrels of oil, with the resulting cost per litre being essentially nothing.

It's also ignorant of the control organisations such as OPEC have over oil production and consumption. Artificially manipulating supply has a far more considerable impact on fuel price than the actual cost of extraction and processing.

You forgot to mention that most of that £1 per litre is government tax.

Plus the government are douchebags. The UK has the highest fuel tax in Europe. Most people need fuel to put in there cars to drive to work, to earn money. When we cant afford fuel, to get to work, how are we meant to get out of a recession if they wont cut the fuel duty?

As I read the first post made in this thread...I began to laugh.

Not only at the fact that the topic itself is completely absurd, but at the fact that the thread starter is so mis-informed.

So I thought I'd have my own say:

Assuming that you are a person with a fairly reasonable level of intellect, you would understand that for starters, the oil/fuel industry is a business. So therefore, you would be able to tell me that a business' main objective is to make a profit. Now for such a business, where fuel and oil has become a necessity within the world, do you think the companies that do this work are not making a hefty profit?

Secondly, you would also be aware that the UK government applies up to what was a record high, 75% tax for fuel.

Now, before you come back with the, "But it costs $1 a barrel and all of this...maybe so, but then bulk purchasing comes into effect where it will cost nothing near $1 a barrel after the refining companies have bought from the drilling companies, the fuel stations have bought from the refining companies and then the consumer has bought from the fuel companies. Now obviously a lot of this process is integrated but for every process, the company/s involved are all making a profit....and then the government steps in.

So to attempt to justify that the price we pay for fuel is ok....I kindly retort with a question...Are you fucking mad!?

ALL STANDARD UNLEADED is moving to biofuel at Shell UK have moved to the new biofuel with 5% ethanol! By 2010 all UK garages will be moving to the biofuel with 10% The new biofuel is cheaper as ethanol is cheap to make! But fuel is still going up even though we lack performance and miles per gallon with the new biofuel!!!!!

First people i heard doing this were Morrisons,and i liked the idea at first. I even made my own 30% blend and ran it successfully.

Well,i say successfully,the car didn't run quite so well despite all efforts to tune it accordingly,and it aggressively corroded my pilot jet valves in my carbs,and tarnished the other jets.

So putting bio-ethanol in fuel will damage,and is damaging,many vehicles. And without their owners knowing.

We've had this with fuels before,the omission of lead in fuel being the main one - and the damage it did to cars not designed to run on unleaded. But at least people were warned..

I have no problem using cleaner fuels,i can only hope that i can source the parts required to keep my car on the road with them.

Morrisons do run this and it has been mentioned throughout a warning on the forums that it will affect older cars. So therefore, if you run an older car, do not buy fuel from Morrisons.

i would like to moan about this too as i live in the western isles top of scotland and already paying 1.16 a litre of unleaded!! NOT GOOD!!
