The fuel company have to spend millions searching for an oil well or buying stakes in one. A lot of the time this includes building new oil rigs.

They then have to extract the oil and ship it to a factory on the other side of the world.

They then have to refine the oil in a long process which costs millions, turning it into fuel / gas e.t.c.

They then have to sail a ship to collect the fuel and transport it all the way back to the UK.

They then have to unload and distribute the fuel to each warehouse and then each truck, in order for delivery to each station.

For all of this, we pay around one pound per litre.

I went to Tesco's yesterday, bought a litre of water for 79p.

I'm sure i heard the same rant on an old top gear.... The fuel companies do all that for around 40p the Goverment has the rest, thats the stupid part. If they cut the tax we wouldn't be in a recession half as long.

I'm undecided about the whole supermarket vs forecourt petrol. The Polo runs quite happily on super unleaded from either, the Passat gives around 50 miles extra per tank on Shell regular unleaded compared to pretty much anything else. I don't notice any difference in the way it runs though.

The fuel companies claim they make money from other goods,which is why the supermarket forecourts are placed at supermarkets and goods in oil company shops are expensive.

But i cant see that being strictly true,its alot of hassle just to sell Mars bars.

The tax is just typical of this government though.

the government makes 67p on each litre in tax anyway! and the reason i complain is because 2 months ago it was 92.9 and now its 112.9 a litre. i hear those of u saying its only 20p but when u put 20 litres in you are paying an extra £4. its a joke.

£1.12 a litre is beginning to take the piss now, only got 135 miles out of my last £21 worth of fuel :( :(

I'm getting into a habbit where I'm not actually looking at prices, so i'm just filling up and findind i'm getting less and less miles per week.

I stuck £30 in the car last week and only done commuter miles, no cruising around for fun.

Its around the £1.09 mark here now and having a BMW is starting to hurt, I fill it up from pretty much empty all the time and its now happily passing the £60 mark everytime.

If it goes up towards the £1.20 a litre mark again I'll have to get rid of it, I just can't justify spending over £70 a week on fuel...its over a tenth of the cars value.

The government could control the prices so well though, its not the fuel companies fault at all that the prices are so high, take away the tax and its cheap as hell, just the fact we are being taxed on tax (which is illegal) its just skyrocketing the price.

But i don't think i should be getting as low mpg as i'm getting, but a service is due when i can eventually get a ramp at work.

I only run on 99ron now (crazy compression ratio), and Shell is a no brainer.

Its nearer to my house than Tesco's for a start.

Its never more expensive.

I believe there's no better quality fuel.

I boycott BP, have done for years,they've lost thousands from me alone. The reason is quite simply that they push the prices of all garages up by always being the most expensive themselves.

very true. if you wont it you have to pay it. thay no thay can get away with putting the price up. same with fags.. coss if you wont fule or fags you just have to pay what eve thay cost.. where i am thay are wonting £1.12L

Fags are about £80 a go round here, it's getting ridiculous.

i would like to moan about this too as i live in the western isles top of scotland and already paying 1.16 a litre of unleaded!! NOT GOOD!!

screw public transport. i live in the city centre but wont get it, because its full of lazy smelly poor people.

if i try to go to my gf's house which is about 40 miles away from my current flat, it costs about the same in fuel, but youre colder, no music tunes, surrounded by disgusting general public and its really unreliable. and then you have to get a bus also so a 30minute cane down the motorway turns into 5 hrs of ballache

Plus driving is fun! i love my car too much to get a bus with utes at the back and ripped up seats and theres always a trap sleeping next to a beer can.

back to topic, I'm sure the amount of driving buses do, they must use more fuel then a 10 cars, plus they have to do the route empty or not.

Well, the double decker buses that do the Bluewater runs average 3-4 mpg, and they have quite a stretch of dual carriageway/motorway to increase their economy, so yeah, a bus would use a lot more fuel than 10 average cars, but they can seat a few and in places where people use the service, they're normally full. When I lived in Kent, I thought the bus service was absolutely astounding. 10 minutes waiting at a stop, and a bus would turn up, normally where you wanted to go. £5 got you a ticket that would take you anywhere pretty much, all day, and it would take you to bluewater too. Where I am now though, it's shocking.

Who gives a shit about 1liter of water is 79p, Get your water out of a tap, its cheaper. We can only get our petrol from one place. To bring the price down you have to stop using the big petrol companies services and go to Asda and Morrisions etc. (Not Tesco though).

To bring the price down, Everybody needs to stop buying petrol.

I often wonder what would happen if Everybody (never gonna happen mind) bought enough fuel to last them 1-2 months and stored it and used it as they needed and didn't buy fuel for a month+. Would never happen, firstly demand would initially outstrip supply, causing fuel to go up etc. Would be interested to see the outcome if people started stockpiling fuel and stopped buying reguarly.

Also if those that could self-propell themselves to work but don't, did so, it would mean less tax to the government, less money to the corps... and more fuel for "pleasure driving".

I ride to work, a mate rides to work.. we both have 4 cars plus another mate does he has three cars, why pay tax sitting in traffic whinging about it if you don't have to?!

I guess what I is saying is, "the government" exploit our lazyness!
